PARENT EDUCATION INSTRUCTOR/

TEACHER COOPERATIVE PRESCHOOL

(Part-time, Non-Tenurable - 2009)

The person hired for this part-time position serves in a combined role and is responsible for 1) providing instruction inParent Education, both in a preschool lab and in a lecture format, and 2) teaching a multi-age class for 3-5 year olds on Tuesdays, 1:15-3:45 p.m. and Fridays, 12:00-2:30 p.m., at Crystal SpringsCooperative Preschool. Lecture Responsibilities:

  • Develop parent education curriculum that is consistent with the SCC-approved Master Course Outline for the courses
  • Plan/facilitate parent education discussions during class time as well as at monthly evening speaker/lecture sessions
  • Plan/implement the program for parents and children, in accordance with the current agreement between SCC and the cooperative preschool, including all policies, guidelines, purposes and philosophies
  • Prepare a written syllabus for each class each quarter
  • Provide educational conferences, counsel, and feedback to parents/students as needed
  • Keep current in the fields of parent and early childhood education.
  • Attend professional growth and training sessions

Preschool Laboratory Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and present a curriculum appropriate to the age and developmental level of the children. The curriculum must be consistent with SCC’s educational goals and philosophy in early childhood education and should reflect National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards.
  • Prepare and supervise the arrangement of the preschool classroom as a laboratory-learning environment.
  • Oversee and manage the preschool classroom for all class participants, including the children and the parents who serve as teacher’s aides.
QUALIFICATIONS

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Early Childhood Education or a related field (e.g., special education, education, human development, family studies, language development, or psychology) or P-3 Early Childhood endorsementor comparable experience and training
  • Experience with early childhood education theories and practices
  • Knowledge of the parent cooperative setting
  • Knowledge of community resources and referral centers

Preferred Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in Early Childhood Education OR a related field
  • CurrentWashingtonState teaching certificate
  • Cooperative preschool experience
Skill in:
Imparting excitement and enthusiasm into teaching
Adapting to a variety of teaching situations and learning styles
Communicating effectively in oral and written English
Working effectively with colleagues, staff, students, administrators, and others of various cultural and socio-economic backgrounds
Contributing to the College’s diversity initiatives and foster a climate of multicultural understanding and appreciation.

PHYSICAL WORK ENVIRONMENT

Work is usually performed in an active early childhood setting. It requires standing, both indoors and outdoors, and on field trips. Knowledge and use of computers for class lists, email correspondence, and other information is important.

TERM OF EMPLOYMENT/SALARY

This is a part-time, non-tenurable, quarter-to-quarter assignment.Parent Education Instructor Salary is based on Shoreline Community College Part-Time Faculty Salary Schedule and dependent on number of contact hours for the assignment. Cooperative Preschool Salary: negotiated with Crystal Springs Cooperative Preschool Board and dependent upon qualifications and number of classes taught for the assignment.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • If a teaching assignment is offered, a collective bargaining agreement exists and membership in the Shoreline Federation of Teachers or payment of a service fee is required
  • In compliance with the Immigration and Nationality Act, proof of authorization to work in the United States will be required at the time of hire
