Units covered / Unit 7: Machining Techniques
Learning aims covered / Learning aim B: Make workpieces using drilling and turning or milling techniques safely
Scenario / You have just taken a position as a Skilled Toolmaker atPearson Engineering Services. Your Supervisor has given you some prototype work with their new drilling and turning or milling machinery, as they are thinking of expanding their offer into the production of more complex, precision components. You need to produce some components that can be shown to potential customers. Additionally, you must create a presentation for your colleagues that explains the in-process and final checks to be carried out to ensure compliance and accuracy.
Task 1 / Making workpieces
You will be provided with an engineering drawing to make a drilled component and an engineering drawing to make a turned or milled component. The drawings will show that both the drilled component and the turned or milled component have compliance and accuracy requirements.
The engineering drawing for the drilled component will require you to produce two simple drilling features and four more complex drilling features to make the component.
The engineering drawing for the turned or milled component will require you to produce two simple turning or milling features and four more complex turning or milling features to make the component.
During the production of the components you must:
  • showhigh levels of safety awareness and consistently use safe working practices
  • ensure that you set positional parameters before machiningand set and monitor dynamic parameters during machining
  • carry out visual and specific checks during makingand when you have completed each component to ensure that they meet the compliance and accuracy requirements stated on the drawings
  • record your in-process and final checks for compliance and accuracy on an inspection chart.
After you have made your components, tell your Supervisor the reasons whyhigh levels of safety awareness and the use of safe working practices are so important when using drilling and turning or milling techniques.
Evidence you must produce for this task /
  • Annotated photographs
  • Detailed learner observation records
  • Inspection charts

Criteria covered by Task 1:
To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to: / Unit / Criterion reference
Set positional parameters before machining and set and monitor dynamic parameters during machining by drilling and turning or milling techniques. / 7 / 2B.P4
Produce two machined workpieces that demonstrate simple and complex features of drilling and turning or milling techniques. / 7 / 2B.P5
Describe and carry out visual and specific checks carried out for compliance and accuracy when producing the machined workpieces. / 7 / 2B.P6 (part)
Demonstrate consistency in safety awareness and safe working practices when machining workpieces. / 7 / 2B.P7
Demonstrate high levels of precision and accuracy when using drilling and turning or milling techniques. / 7 / 2B.M2
Explain the importance of safe working practices when using drilling and turning or milling techniques. / 7 / 2B.M4
Task 2 / Review of accuracy checks
You now need to produce and deliver a PowerPoint presentation. In this presentation, you must tell your colleagues about:
  • the visual and specific checks for compliance and accuracy that you carried out when making the components in Task 1
  • why you carried out these checks both during the making of the components and when you had completed the components (use examples to help you)
  • how precise and accurate you were when producing all the features on the components, ensuring that you identify which features you did well, which features you did not do as well and why (use examples and your inspection charts to help you).

Evidence you must produce for this task /
  • PowerPoint presentation with embedded annotated photographs/inspection charts
  • Detailed learner observation record

Criteria covered by Task 2:
To achieve the criteria you must show that you are able to: / Unit / Criterion reference
Describe and carry out visual and specific checks carried out for compliance and accuracy when producing the machined workpieces. / 7 / 2B.P6 (part)
Explain why it is important to carry out checks on the accuracy of workpiece features both during and after manufacture. / 7 / 2B.M3
Assess own levels of precision and accuracy, identifying strengths and weaknesses and safe working practices. / 7 / 2B.D2
