SENATE RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, The Texas Senate takes great pleasure in
recognizing the team members from J. Earl Selz High School in
the Pilot Point Independent School District who won the Texas
Small Schools Academic Contest recently; and
WHEREAS, Christopher Cook, Cash Cooper, and Jared Maier
won their regional contest and advanced to the state contest,
where they defeated 39 other teams from around the state; all
questions in the contest are taken from the curriculum for Texas
Public Schools; coach for the team is Richard Dane, who is also
the principal of the high school; and
WHEREAS, The son of Buddy and Pauline Cook of
Pilot Point, Texas, Christopher Ivan Cook is the valedictorian
of the Class of 1995; he is the recipient of a scholarship awarded
by the members of the Independent Colleges and Universities of
Texas as well as a scholarship from the Texas Education Agency
for any college or university in Texas; and
WHEREAS, Chris has also received the Pilot Point Independent
School District Employees Scholarship, the Beta Club Scholarship,
the North Texas Board of Regents'/President's Excellence Scholarship,
a University of Texas at Arlington Freshman Scholarship, a Texas
Wesleyan University General Scholarship, and the Texas Association
of Community Schools Scholarship for Academic Decathlon winners;
and
WHEREAS, A wellrounded individual, Chris is a member of
the Beta Club and is involved in church and community activities;
he plans to attend Texas Wesleyan University first and then
The University of Texas at Austin, where he will major in
architectural engineering; and
WHEREAS, Cash Conrad Cooper is the son of Gail Edward Cooper
and Deborah Cooper of Aubrey, Texas; he received the Texas Association
of Community Schools Scholarship for Academic Decathlon winners; and
WHEREAS, An exceptional student, Cash is planning to attend
college to study business and fashion design; and
WHEREAS, Jared Eugene Maier is the son of Larry and Pam Maier
of Pilot Point, Texas; Jared received a Dr. Pepper Bottling Company
of Texas scholarship and the Texas Association of Community Schools
Scholarship for Academic Decathlon winners; and
WHEREAS, Jared participated in extracurricular activities
throughout his four years in high school; an outstanding athlete,
Jared participated annually in football, basketball, and track;
he is a member of the Beta Club and is involved in numerous church
and community activities; he plans to attend Baylor University and
major in computer science; and
WHEREAS, These exceptional young men have brought recognition
to themselves, their parents, their school, and their community and
they are truly deserving of legislative commendation; now, therefore,
be it
RESOLVED, That the Senate of the State of Texas,
74th Legislature, hereby extend congratulations to Chris Cook,
Cash Cooper, and Jared Maier for winning the Texas Small Schools
Academic Contest and extend best wishes to them for continued
success in their college studies; and, be it further
RESOLVED, That a copy of this Resolution be prepared for
them as an expression of esteem from the Texas Senate.
