AIRCRAFT PILOT1

Full-time, classified staff position for the Aviation Department

SALARY: Washington State Department of Human Resources range 48 step A, $3309 per month followed by periodic increments to $4340 per monthsubject to legislative funding. Mandatory six to twelve month probationaryperiod.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Under general supervision, safely pilot a variety of single-engine aircraft. Perform weather checks and prepare flight plans. Monitor aircraft systems and communicate with the Big Bend Community College (BBCC) Chief Pilot and dispatcher. Instruction to BBCC Aviation students includes, but is not limited to: safe performance of pre-flight checks, safe flying regulations and appropriate communication. Makes quick, accurate decisions when unexpected situations develop in flight; exercises sound judgment and tact when dealing with students. Complies with BBCC, FAA, and all state and federal regulations. Performs other non-flight duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Chief Pilot.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

  1. Ensure that the controls of the aircraft are working properly.
  2. Check weather conditions and liaise with BBCC dispatcher.
  3. Perform pre-flight preparation, file flight plan, and calculate fuel required.
  4. Perform pre-flight checks to ensure that the aircraft and its systems are prepared for flight.
  5. Check controls, instruments, and engines.
  6. React quickly and make vital decisions in changing situations.
  7. Instruct Aviation students on proper pre-flight operations, proper handling of all BBCC aircraft during pre-flight, actual flying, and all post-flight activities.
  8. Advises students on the progress of their flight and instructs on improving flying skills.
  9. Taxi aircraft to appropriate parking zone, shut down engines, write flight report, and note any problems or technical difficulties.
  10. Sign off the appropriate logs and records, prepare reports as required to comply with state and FAA regulations.
  11. Maintain professional behavior.
  12. Perform other non-flight duties as assigned by supervisor and/or Chief Pilot.

OTHER WORK ACTIVITIES:

  1. Maintains professional growth and development through seminars, workshops and professional affiliations to keep abreast of latest trends in field of expertise.
  2. Ensures no injuries to self or others by following safe work practices and policies. This includes, but is not limited to: security and safety, understanding of MSDS, equipment, infection control, fire, disaster, safe lifting and body mechanics.
  3. Ensures compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.
  4. Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures the interaction with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive to the college’s values.
  5. Perform related duties and responsibilities as may be required.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION REQUIRE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE IN:

  1. Flying and instructing students in the following aircraft: Beech, Bonanza, Musketeer (Sport) and/or Sundowner, Piper: Seminole, Warrior III, Citabria, Cessna 180 Amphibian aircraft, and Frasca 141, 142 simulators.
  2. Safe work practices.
  3. Microsoft Office, specifically MS Outlook.

(e)Meet the recent flight experience requirements of 61.56 and 61.57 to carry passengers and hold the minimum required instrument experience listed in 61.57 (c) or completed an instrument proficiency check within the last six months

  • 800 + hours of dual flight instruction given as a flight instructor
  • Other requirements:

(a)Finalists will be required to satisfactorily complete an evaluation/standardization check flight with the college's chief pilot.

(b)Applicants must provide an authorized release permitting the college's chief pilot to examine the applicant’s FAA Accident/incident file.

ADDITIONAL DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:

  1. Bilingual fluency, especially in Spanish.
  2. Previous experience working in a multi-cultural environment.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to use hand to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; and reach with hand and arms. The employee is frequently required to stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl to perform the duties of Pilot. This position works with very small components and works in confined spaces. The employee in this position may be exposed to loud noise, chemicals, fumes, and changing temperature conditions. This position requires lifting up to 50 pounds on a regular basis and up to 100 pounds on an occasional basis. The job description does not constitute a written or implied contract of employment.
