SBI3U Grade 11 Biology Dry Lab Name:
Unit: Genetic Processes Date:
Design a Dragon
Overview
In this activity, you will design a dragon using pre-determined genotypes and phenotypes.
Let’s get start!
Determine the biological sex of your dragon by flipping a coin. Heads is female and tails is male. ______
What will my dragon look like?
For the rest of the activity, you will flip a coin to determine what characteristics your dragon will have.
Chromosome 1 and Chromosome 2
The traits determined by Chromosome 1 and Chromosome 2 are dominant, recessive, incomplete dominant or co-dominant and are outlined in the tables below.
Chromosome 1Neck:
N-long
N-short / Breath:
F-fire-breathing
f-no fire / Eyes:
R-red
RY-orange
Y-yellow
Chromosome 2
Body:
G-green
GP-green and purple stripes
P-purple / Wings:
W-red wings
w-yellow wings / Claws:
C-three claws
c-four claws
Flip a coin to determine if the allele is dominant or recessive. Heads is dominant and tails is recessive. You will need to flip the coin twice since the above traits are determined by two alleles. Fill in the chart below.
Chromosome 1Trait / Genotype / Homozygous, heterozygous, or neither / Type of inheritance (dominant, recessive, incomplete dominant, or co-dominant) / Phenotype
Neck
Breath
Eyes
Chromosome 2
Trait / Genotype / Homozygous, heterozygous, or neither / Type of inheritance (dominant, recessive, incomplete dominant, or co-dominant) / Phenotype
Body
Wings
Claws
Chromosome 3
The traits determined by Chromosome 3 are sex-linked and are outlined in the table below.
Chromosome 3Spikes:
S-spike at the end of tail
s-no spike / Tail:
T-long tail
t-short tail / Horn:
H-horn
n-no horn
Male sex-chromosomes are represented by XY. Most sex-linked traits for males are encoded by the X chromosome. Therefore, you will only have to flip the coin once if your dragon is a male.
Female sex-chromosomes are represented by XX, meaning that their sex-linked traits are encodes by two X-chromosomes. Therefore, you will have to flip the coin twice if your dragon is a female.
In the genotype column in the chart below, you will write the genotype in the following format: e.g. XSY for males with spikes at the end of the tail; XSXS for females with spikes at the end of the tail (hint: the sex-linked traits for female are similar to dominant and recessive traits).
Chromosome 3Trait / Genotype / Homozygous, heterozygous, or neither / Type of inheritance / Phenotype
Tail Spike
Tail Length
Horn
Now you are ready to design your dragon!
Use the following chart to summarize the characteristics of your dragon.
Dragon’s name: / Sex:Trait / Genotype / Phenotype
Neck
Breath
Eyes
Body
Wings
Claws
Tail Spike
Tail Length
Horn
Draw and colour your dragon in the box below or on chart paper.
