I Do (modeling)

Rational: To make the playground safe, fun and have students get along with each other.

What does Respectful look like on the Playground?

  1. Voice Level-green
  2. Use kind words and manners—Is it Ok for me to play?
  3. Use good sportsmanship
  4. Play games fairly
  5. Encourage others
  6. Cheer for others
  7. Don’t get upset when something doesn’t go your way
  8. Redo the “play” if you cannot peacefully come to an agreement on the outcome.
  9. Respect personal space. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  10. Use your words and conflict resolution to solve problems:
  11. When using conflict resolution everyone has a chance to speak and be heard.
  12. Use I messages to share how you feel and what you want out of the situation.
  13. Brainstorm solutions to solve the problem and peacefully choose one they can agree upon.
  14. If you can’t agree upon a peaceful solution, ask an adult for help.
  15. If there is an accident, tell the person it was an accident right away and offer to help them.

What does Responsible look like on the playground?

  1. Follow classroom procedures when the bell rings immediately.
  2. Promptly line up and return to your classroom when the bell or whistle blows (do not continue to play after the bell rings).
  3. When entering the building voice level of quiet.
  4. Follow playground rules.

a.Wear appropriate clothing items for the weather. (boots, mittens, hat, warm winter coat for winter/jacket if the temperature is cool/ tennis shoes)

b.All students are expected to participate in recess.

c.Do not leave the playground unless instructed by an adult.

d.Follow adult directions the first time.

e.When exiting from the building you should have a voice level of quiet. Exit through the doors and walk till you get to the blacktop, go immediately to the trail for 1 lap. Walk or run the trail without touching other students, all go in the same direction.

f.Choose an OK to play game from the Game Board. Follow game rules that you learned in PE.

g.No pencils, markers, or pens should be at recess.

h.Invite others to play and let anyone play who wants to.

i.Share and take turns.

j.Don’t choose teams based on ability level.

k.Wear jerseys when playing team sports. Put them back where they belong when done.

What does Safe look like on the playground?

  1. Use equipment properly
  2. Slide down slides-not walk up them
  3. leave tire chips on the ground
  4. use can jams only for the can jam game
  5. climb up and down the climbing wall—do not jump off
  6. Each class uses their own playground balls and jump ropes.
  7. Return all equipment to its proper location when finished.
  8. Play safely/follow safety rules
  9. No chasing or chasing games allowed.
  10. Students will be allowed to toss a football between two students
  11. Students may play pretend games as long as they are not chase games or with a violent theme.
  12. No gymnastics outside
  13. No playing on hill behind basketball court
  14. Keep moving if on the track
  15. No hanging on the fence
  16. Get an adult if a ball goes outside the playground area
  17. Play away from the portables or classroom windows
  18. Stay in assigned area.
  19. Ask permission to leave the playground.
  20. Keep your hands and feet to yourself.
  21. Report problems to an adult immediately.

We Do (guided practice)

  1. Teachers ask the class: Why is it important to behave this way on the playground?
  2. Review the OK to play Game Board.
  3. Review game rules to each of the games on the Game Board.
  4. Brainstorm a list of possible recess problems. Role play one of the situations from the list using conflict resolution to solve it.
  5. Discuss situations at recess that need to be reported to an adult.
  6. Make a list of where equipment goes back.

They Do (partner practice)

Practice:

Practice entering and exciting the building.

I AM RESPECTFUL, RESPONSIBLE, AND SAFE!

Examples: Voice level quiet, walking feet, hands and feet to self.

Non-Examples:Teacher role plays non-examples: Kids arguing, fighting, students not lining up quickly or continuing to play after the bell or whistle blows.

Examples: Coming in when the bell or whistle blows. Designated person brings in classroom equipment. Everyone puts equipment away that they used.

Non-Examples:Teacher role plays non-examples: students not lining up quickly or continuing to play after the bell or whistle blows. Students leaving jereseys all over the playground, students leaving balls and jump ropes outside and leaving sand toys in the sand box.

Practice: Identify procedure to ensure all students practice the behaviors in the location (i.e. at least twice to achieve fluency) Have them demonstrate the appropriate behaviors in small groups and have the other students give them a thumbs up or thumbs down for their example. Do some role plays and have students determine which ones are examples and which are non-examples.

Reinforcement: Have students clap for students who role played the scenarios for you and give Panther tickets to the students who volunteered to role play the good examples and compliment their willingness to demonstrate for the group. Reinforce intermittently the students as they practice positive behaviors with their partners.

Follow-Up Plan: Identify what adults will do to review expectations and behaviors for this setting and ensure 5:1 ratio of positive acknowledgements versus corrections occurring in this setting.
