Challenge

Anneka Rice first became a famous TV personality in the TreasureHunt programme. Viewers saw her jumping in and out of a helicopteras she tried to find the hidden treasure. But Anneka wanted to make aprogramme that would have somelasting benefit. She got her chanceduring the BBC's annual Children in Need Appeal. They wanted her toorganize an ice skating show with a full orchestra on the River Thames.All the money from the show,would go to help the appeal. Anneka hadexactly twelve hours to complete the challenge.

If you had been by the Thames that day, you would have seen Anneka telephoning all sorts of people and asking them for help. Then she got top musicians and dancers to perform. During the day people could watch the show coming together on television.

The challenge idea had been a great success. Each programme would have a different challenge. Some people in Northern Ireland wanted a children's playground built. Another challenger wanted to have an old railway station restored. A school wanted to have a new classroom built.

A challenge has to be done in a time limit and everything has to be filmed. One team of a cameraman and a sound recordist goes with Anneka everywhere. A second team follows Anneka and the first team and films them. The third team stays at the site and films the things that are happening there.

The important thing about the challenges is that they can only be done by asking,other people to help. They paint walls, write plays, make curtains, print books, provide food, plants, clothes and anything else that is needed for the challenge. A lot of celebrities from sport, the theatre and TV come to help, too. Anneka says that she is always amazed how generous people are.

Who knows? You might find that blue and yellow lorry parked in your street. Then be prepared for the most exciting and exhausting time of your life. Nobody sleeps when you challenge Anneka.
