PROFESSIONAL TREE CARE ASSOCIATION OF SAN DIEGO TO BRING 30 VOLUNTEERS & DONATED EQUIPMENT TO

SAN DIEGO BOTANIC GARDEN TO PROVIDE TREE TRIMMING SERVICES TO ENCINITAS NON-PROFIT

The Professional Tree Care Association (PTCA) of San Diego has selected San Diego Botanic Garden in Encinitas to be the recipient of FREE tree trimming services this year on Arbor Day – Friday, April 29 from 10 am – 3 pm.

PTCA will be providing 30 volunteers, including tree trimmers and ground men, along with trucks and chippers to work on trees throughout the Garden in need of PTCA’s expertise. PTCA estimates the total cost of donation for to be $40,000 in services and equipment rental during Arbor Day 2016.

“Each year, we select an organization in high need of professional tree care and low in funding, in order to give back to the community,” says Michael Reed, President of PTCA of San Diego. “PTCA was set up to educate the public on correct tree care. People assume that because you have a saw and a truck, you can do tree work. Tree trimming takes many years of experience to do correctly for the safety and health of the tree.”

A 50 foot Tipuana Tipu Tree that is structurally unsound, located in the Garden’s Rainforest, is being removed for visitor safety on Arbor Day by PTCA volunteers, according to SDBG Horticulture Director Paul Redeker. By removing the tree, it will also allow more sunlight into the Garden’s pond area, promoting lily pad growth. Chip material from the Tipu Tree will be reused as mulch in other areas throughout the Garden.
