- Criteria For Registration As An Assessor
- Background
As per SAQA’s Criteria and Guidelines for the Registration of Assessors, an assessor is an individual who will be responsible for the assessment of the achievement of learning outcomes. The notion of the trainer being both the learning facilitator and assessor means that trainers who traditionally administered assessment, in addition to facilitating learning, can be registered as assessors.
- Who can register as an Assessor?
Anyone who meets the following requirements can be an assessor. Assessors can come from a number of sources:
- Trainers/teachers/lecturers;

- Interpersonal skills:
It is important for the assessor to have good interpersonal skills and to be able to communicateeffectively with learners. The assessor needs to establish a trusting relationship with learners. This is to ensure that learners can perform optimally during an assessment. This is also to assure the learner that the assessor has their interests at heart. This is achieved by ensuring that:

- The assessor acts with integrity;
- The assessor maintains confidentiality and;
- The assessment is conducted according to the principles of a good assessment.
- Subject matter expertise:
- Assessors must be proficient in the subject matter of the learning area in which they are assessing.
- Assessors should be experts in the unit standard requirementsor qualifications for which they are registered.
- The assessor’s subject matter knowledge should be at least one level higher than that of the learner.
2.What Is The Role Of The Assessor?
- The role of the assessor is to:
- Inform the learner about the qualification or unit standard requirements.
- Support and guide the learner in the collection of evidence.
- Help the learner plan for the assessment.
- Inform the learner about the timing of the assessment.
- Conduct the assessment and provide feedback.
- Fulfilling the role:
To be able to fulfil these roles the assessor has to:
- Become familiar with the qualification and the unit standards that he/she will be assessing;
- Plan and design the assessment (or source appropriate assessment methods and instruments and modify these if necessary) and;
- Collect evidence of the learner’s performance. This evidence must be in accordance with Fasset’s:
