When you think of money, you probably think of that paper and those coins you have in your piggybank, wallet, or purse. But the currency we use today was not utilized by the first settlers; in fact, they did not even think of it. Instead, such items such as wampum, cut nails, or tobacco leaves were used as legal tender.
Paper money, called Continental Currency, was first issued during the American Revolution by Congress. In 1791, the failed First Bank of the United States began issuing currency, cashing personal checks, and holding deposits for the people. In 1816, the Second Bank of the United States tried to do the same, but was not successful either. In 1862, over 1,600 state banks took over where these banks had failed. That same year, the U.S. Treasury began printing greenbacks to be used as currency. During subsequent years, the government has issued national bank notes, gold certificates and coins, silver certificates, and Federal Reserve notes. The money we use today has slowly evolved from these beginnings. The Diners’ Club, a privately owned company, started the credit card revolution in 1950.
Money matters have changed greatly in our history. But, we still trade one item for another, whether it is paper, metal, or plastic.
