Welcome
Abby Zitelman will be working as an Ophthalmic Technician – non certified with us on an as needed basis to assist in clinic. She is currently a student at University of Missouri majoring in Health Sciences. Her official start date was January 8, 2018.
Dianna Jonesrejoined our team as an Ophthalmic Technician – non certified. She worked for the Mason Eye Institute from 2011 to 2014 before moving out of state. Dianna possesses seven years’ experience as an Optician and three years’ experience working in the field of Ophthalmology. Dianna’s official start date was January 22, 2018.

Dr. Jarstad will be keynote speaker at the Advanced Techniques in Cataract Surgery Conference March 3 and a visiting professor at the Kyrg Republic University Department of Ophthalmology in Bishkek, capital city of Kyrgyzstan February 27 to March 5, 2018.
Dr. John Jarstad just completed editing into English from Bahasa Indonesian: “Journey to the Greater Good - A History of Ophthalmology in Indonesia” for the Jakarta Eye Center’s 40th anniversary International Meeting (JECIM). The 19 chapter book will be given to all the international speakers at the meeting March 10-11, 2018, where Dr. Jarstad and Dr. Jella An have been invited as Distinguished International Speakers and Guests of Honor.
Drs. An, JarstadandMohan’’s abstract “A Novel Decorin and SAHA Combination Therapy to Treat Bleb Fibrosis in Vivo in Rabbits” was accepted to be presented at the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) meeting in Honolulu, Hawaii, April 29 – May 3, 2018.
Dr. Jarstad’s paper: “An Unusual Case of Cataract Surgery in a 22 yr old Monocular Law Student With Severe Uveitis During Finals Week,” was selected for presentation at the Caribbean Eye Meeting in Cancun, Mexico, February 5. His video entry of “The Fisherman’s Knot for Iris Repair,” will also be presented at the Academy Awards Video Competition at the conference.
Dr. Jarstadwas runner-up for the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery (ASCRS) Foundation Chang Humanitarian Award for his outstanding work to eradicate preventable blindness. The David and Victoria Chang Humanitarian Award was established to honor and recognize outstanding humanitarian work in the area of cataract blindness.
Lindsey McDaniel received a $750 Travel Grant from the Knights Templar Eye Foundation to make two presentations at the Association of Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO) in Hawaii, April 29-May 3, 2018. The presentations are: “Characterization and Role of KCa3.1 Ion Channel in Corneal Wound Healing and Fibrosis” (authors: McDaniel LM, Gupta S, Fink MK, Hesemann N, Sinha PR, Heil S, Gafen HB, Bowles DK, Mohan RR), and “A novel Decorin + SAHA Combination Therapy to Treat Bleb Fibrosis in vivo in rabbits” (authors: An JA, Gupta S, Fink MK, Hesemann N, Tripathi R, Sinha PR, McDaniel LM, Mohan RR.)

a small town of 400, called Alma, MO. She loves Cardinal baseball
and Golden State Warrior Basketball, and of course any sport Mizzou plays!
Farewell
Cyndi Hyde has decided to leave her position of Ophthalmic Technician – Certified to pursue employment in Jefferson City at JCMG Ophthalmology, with Dr. Wilson. Her last day in the clinic will be Friday, February 2, 2018 Cyndi has been employed with the Ophthalmology clinic since February 1999. Her experience and expertise in the field of Ophthalmology with be missed.We wish her the best in her future endeavors.

What was the origin of the Super Bowl?
When the two leagues (AFL & NFL) merged in June 1966, one of the provisions of the merger was the creation of a championship game. But they didn't know what to call it. The first Championship Game (Super Bowl) was played on Jan. 15, 1967. After the league commissioner Bert Bell passed away, the owners held a meeting to pick the new commissioner - Pete Rozelle. One of Rozelle’s suggestions was ‘The Big One’ which never caught on, ‘Pro Bowl’ was too confusing because that was the same name for the NFL's all star game and ‘World Series of Football' reminded people of baseball. Finally, Rozelle called it ‘The AFL-NFL World Championship Game’. It became the official name but it was too long and didn't look good in newspaper headlines.
It was Lamar Hunt, the main founder of the AFL and owner of the Kansas City Chiefs, who came up on the term “Super Bowl” based on his son's toy (Super Ball). According to his son, Lamar had said “Well, we need to come up with a name, something like the ‘Super Bowl’…Actually, that’s not a very good name. We can come up with something better”. But Super Bowl stuck in the media and through word of mouth and that's how it got its name.
