MCBI Seed Grant Application2016-2017

MCBI Seed Grant Application

At its sole discretion, the MCBI can allocate seed grant funds for use by use by University of South Carolina faculty who wish to obtain pilot data for an external grant application (NIH, NSF, etc.). The MCBI is currently accepting proposals for seed grants of up to $10,000 of scanning time. In order to be considered for these funds, the PI must be a faculty member at the University of South Carolina. This request is intended for researchers who do not already possess startup or external funds to do MRI research at MCBI, unless the proposal represents a significant departure from the faculty member’s current line of research. Student-led proposals will not be considered. In addition to scientific merit, successful proposals will demonstrate how data collected with seed grant funds will be used in a specific application for external funding. It is possible to apply for more than one seed grant. In considering additional seed grants, the MCBI will heavily weight progress resulting from the initial Seed Grant(s) (e.g. grant applications and funding and publications resulting from the initial Seed Grant).

All seed grant proposals should include:

  • The project title.
  • The team members (PI, other collaborators).
  • An abstract (in lay terms) of the project (<250 words) explicitly stating the broad impact of the project.
  • A project description (≤4 pages) that includes:
  1. A statement of the scientific question or problem.
  2. A description of the background of the question or problem and its significance.
  3. The specific aims of the project.
  4. Methodological approaches to those aims.
  5. A plan for obtaining external funding based on the data collected.

NOTE:Project description should be written in such a manner that readers outside of the applicants’ primary discipline will be able to comprehend it. Project descriptions that are not readily understandable by the reviewers will not be scored.

  • A budget description that itemizes the number of scanning hours required.
  • Permissions/approvals for the care and use of vertebrate non-human animals, or human subjects.
  • CVs of the PI and other collaborators.

Applications should be submitted electronically to the Managing Director of the MCBI, Roger D. Newman-Norlund (). Applications will be considered on a rolling basis. Seed grant funds must be used within 1 calendar year of the award date and can only be used for scan time (these funds cannot be used to reimburse participants or purchase additional equipment). The seed grant application form can be obtained by emailing the Managing Director of the MCBI ().
