I am Community Medicine…
Name: Sarah-Anne Schumann
Hometown: Chicago
Occupation: Family Medicine Physician and Dean of Community Health for OU School of Community Medicine
Bill Walczak would be proud… Like Sarah-Anne, Walczak embodies true commitment to community health. He founded the Codman Health Center, where Sarah-Anne had her continuity clinic during residency. This clinic provides high quality health care, and has also led the revitalization efforts in the area with job training, programs for youth, and a charter high school.
Sarah-Anne recently moved to Tulsa to help start the new four year School of Community Medicine, and is working to reduce health disparities and improve the health of underserved communities in Tulsa and the rest of Oklahoma.
Interacting with people from different parts of the community is the first step…
She thinks we need to learn as much as we can about the community by forming true partnerships, and listening to what community members think will help, before we can improve the health of the community.
Her ideal patient visit… involves having enough time to spend the visit listening to the patient and learning about the patient’s values to help him or her make good health decisions.
An ideal patient to Sarah-Anne is one where she follows several generations of a family and has known the patient for many years.
You can find her in the trenches…
Sarah-Anne tries to get students and residents off campus and into the community-not just for clinical experiences but also for service-learning experiences like providing health education in schools.
Social responsibility means getting to know, working with and helping people from underserved communities.
Sarah-Anne trained in Community Health Centers during medical school and residency in Boston and completed her National Health Service Corps commitment at Chicago Family Health Center. Before moving to Tulsa last year, she was the Director of Community Health and Service-Learning at the University of Chicago. Now, she spends half her time seeing patients and developing educational programs at Morton Comprehensive Health Services in North Tulsa.
