6th Grade National Park Brochure Assignment

Please sit down and read through this assignment carefully. All 6th grade students will be making a tri-fold National Parks brochure for our study of ecosystems. This brochure will provide vital information to your readers so they can become more educated on your particular National Park.

Once you have been assigned a park, it’s time to research information and gather images for your brochure. You will need to provide details based on your research, as well as 20-25 different images to cover the six sections of the tri-fold.

Type your answers in a Word document and save to your student locker or personal pen drive.

What is the history and location of your park? What biomes are in your park? (3-4 sentences)

What abiotic conditions, including climate, weather, and landforms, are a part of your park? (Give averages. Highs and lows. Best months to visit, etc. (5-6 sentences)

Describe the diversity of life in the park, including specific information about species (plants and animals) native to the park.

Go to Google and type in the name of your park + wildlife. Choose two animals and describe.

Give information about the park’s natural resources and name one environmental impact issue that is affecting the park (4-6 sentences). Note: If you cannot find any information, give some information on global impact to parks and wildlife in general.

Write information about hours and days of operation and what a visitor needs to know to come to the park.

Use a minimum of three websites and copy/paste information into the back of your brochure as a list of references. A map of your park should be on this panel.

Downloading images for your brochure:

  1. Go to Alta Vista or Google Images and type in the name of your park + photo(s) and you will get a huge selection by adding the word photo or photos to your search. Do the same for other categories. For example, type in Yellowstone photos, Yellowstone Map, Yellowstone weather, Yellowstone biomes, etc.
  2. Once you have found an image you like, click on the largest version of that image. Then, Click and drag it directly into your National Park Folder inside of the Student Files. (Be sure to have both windows up for quick and easy transfer.

1-2 Cover images of excellent quality. Your cover should have the best images you find of your park

3 landforms (or abiotic conditions)

1 natural resource

1 weather image

Once you have gathered enough images, you can start placing them into your brochure into the appropriate areas.

Go to the hard drive and open Applications. Open Pages. Choose a three-fold brochure. Open it and immediately go to File... Save As... name it yournamebrochure(example:Janebrochure) and save it to teachers folder…under your named folder in the student files.
