Dear Parents / Carers
In school we are supporting your child to read and write high frequency words as part of the English Curriculum. Please find attached a copy of the first 100 high frequency words. These words are ones which your child needs to recognise, rather than being able to sound out. This will help your child become a more fluent reader. When your child can read some of these words it would be beneficial if they could spell them so that they have these spellings when writing sentences.
Below are some suggestions of games and activities you could do with your child to help them. These activities should only last for a few minutes and focus on several words at a time.
Reading
· Write/print the focus words on pieces of paper and play snap.
· Write them on paper and hide them around the house and send them on missions to find them.
· Play Spider (a version of the hangman game)
· Write a silly sentence for your child to highlight the focus words and then read together.
· Search for the words in books or other texts at home.
Writing
· Look, cover, write, check – this is the strategy we use in school.
· Fold a piece of paper into 6 and children write a high frequency word in each space. Then have a game of bingo.
· Have rectangles of paper and children write a high frequency word on either end. Then have a game of dominoes.
· Pick 3 high frequency words and write them in a silly sentence.
Duplicate copies of the high frequency words will be available via our school website. We appreciate your co-operation in encouraging children to learn to read and write the high frequency words with you at home. Please ask your child’s teacher if you require any extra assistance with these tasks.
