AmericanPsychiatric Association Publishing is eager to consider proposals for new books in itspublications program. To receivefull consideration, prospectiveauthors must submita completedAuthor Questionnaire(attachedto this form) along with a detailedoutlineor tableof contents, a curriculumvitae, anda briefprospectusexplainingwhy, in theauthor’s view, American Psychiatric Association Publishing shouldpublish theproposedbook.Note:If thebookproposedisan edited, multicontributor volume, thesubmittedoutlineshould beannotatedwith briefparagraphs describingthecontent of each chapter, accompanied by a list of proposedcontributors. Although American Psychiatric AssociationPublishing will consider completedmanuscripts for publication,weprefer submissions at the proposal stageso that wecan help authors in thedevelopmentof their books.

AppropriateSubmissions

Projects with significantresearch,educational,or clinicalapplications inpsychiatry aregiven thehighest priority.Wealso consider books about psychiatry andrelatedissues for other health professionals.Finally, wealsopublishbooks about psychiatry for thegeneral public; weareinterestedin authoritative books that interpret thescientific andmedical aspects of serious mental illness for the laypublic.

 Evaluation

When wefirst receivea proposal, wereviewit internally for several factors:whether the project issuitablefor our publishing program, thepotential audience andsalesfor thebook,whether the author(s)or editor(s)can complete thebookas proposedon time, a financialanalysis of theproject, andhow thebookcompares with books published by us and by other publishers in thesamesubject area.This initial evaluationis made jointly by theEditor‐in‐Chief, theEditorial Director, the Director of Sales andMarketing,andtheDirector of Financial andBusinessOperations andmay involveoutside editorial advisers.

 Acceptance

If your proposal is accepted, wemay offer youa publicationcontract, which sets forth the basictermsof our agreement.In brief, American Psychiatric Association Publishing agreesto publish theworkwithin a specifiedperiodof time and paya royalty basedon a percentageof all moniesactuallyreceived by us for the saleof thebook.In exchange,theauthor agrees to complete the manuscript by a given deadline, grants exclusiverights tothework, andwarrants that the materialis original,nonlibelous,andfree of anycopyright restrictions. Thecontractis subjectto negotiation.

Whenthecompletedmanuscriptissubmitted,itisreviewedbyatleastonepeerreviewerselected bytheEditor‐in‐ Chief.Ananonymouscopyofthepeerreviewer’scommentsisprovided totheauthor sothatappropriaterevisionscanbe madebeforethefinal acceptanceof the manuscriptbyAmericanPsychiatric AssociationPublishing. Afterfinal acceptance, themanuscriptisthenpreparedforpublication,usually withabout10monthselapsingbetween acceptanceof thefinal manuscriptandpublicationofthebook.Ifthebookisnotreceivedbythedatespecifiedinthecontract,thepublication datemay besubstantiallydelayed.

At American Psychiatric AssociationPublishing, weinvolveour authors intheprocess ofmarketing andpromoting their books.After signing their contracts,authors areaskedto complete a detailedMarketing InformationQuestionnaire, which forms an essentialpartof theinformation neededto promotetheauthor’sbook.
