- Rosemary Riley, PhD, LDshared information on cooking skills interventions and their impact on diet quality, food resource management and health conditions. Rosemary reviewed national cooking interventions, including Commonthreads.org, Cooking with Kids, Cooking Matters, SNAP-ED/EFNEP and Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine. Dr. Riley reviewed studies regarding these interventions and how effective they are, including the recent review by McGowan, et al, 2015 Domestic Cooking and Food Skills: A Review. Dr. Riley also discussed evaluation components and what the key to success is for the different programs. Generally, learning knife skills can be a key to engaging participants. One model is Cooking Matters, a 6 week hands-on cooking and nutrition class for kids and families. Cooking Matters sometimes includes ingredients that participants go home with after each class. There is also Cooking Matters for ECE providers that has been run via grant funding.
Local Matters is running several cooking classes, including simplified Goldring culinary medicine with pediatricians at NCH, and one-off cooking classes in their community kitchen (local-matters.org/classes-events).
- SUTQ Update - Beth Miller, PhD reviewed her presentation she provided the Pediatric Obesity CoIIN on 1/19/17. CoIIN had concerns over monitoring and expectations for monitors to be nutrition experts. Suggest changing request for curriculums to request that learning plans have HEAL activities. Suggested adding star 2 requirements and to avoid standards that impinge on families. Recommended focus groups to get further feedback on recommendations.
Network discussed changes to made, including concerns over what teachers are eating. What teachers eat may get a lot of push back from unions. There is precedent for this requirement in New Jersey. Will check NJ wording for this rule. Discussed SSB and sugar sweets items. This standard would be hard for sites because of demands puts on families. Suggested changing this standard to what is provided BY ECE. Discussed adding some items for 2 stars where it is not burdensome. Adding in avoiding food rewards for 2 star would be hard. Talked about physical activity requirements and adding components for 2 star that make for progressive standards. Agreed to revise SUTQ and resend to CoIIN to do focus groups.
