Email Addresses for Schools
As communication is becoming more online, it is important that the email addresses we use are professional and add clarity to the recipient to whom the email has originated from. The domain essex.sch.uk is controlled by Essex County Council and is restricted to Essex Schools.
Why should I use an Essex schools email address?
- Educational Grade Email Systems
Essex Schools Broadband service provide email addresses via Office 365 for Schools which use data centres that store emails within the EU and are therefore offer some assurance around the protection of the stored data. Email addresses supplied as part of your VLE’s should also provide a good level of assurance from the internet, but schools are advised to confirm with their provider for assurances.
Unfortunately, ‘free’ email accounts cannot always offer the same level of protection.
The emails systems from your VLE or Office365 are not classed as a secure email system and should not be used for sending confidential information as they are not fully encrypted.
- Control
Through using email addresses provided by the Essex Schools Broadband service or via your VLE*, you are able to have full control over email accounts. Therefore if a colleague is unable to access their emails, delegation rights can be set to allow another member of staff to access their account ensuring important information is not missed.
Alternatively, if a member of staff leaves the school, the email account can be “switched off” so they will no longer receive emails regarding school business, providing privacy control and confidence that information is shared with colleagues only.
Additionally, general email addresses can be handed over to another member of staff and passwords can be easily changed, preventing the requirement of new email addresses when a member of staff moves on.
In regards to student accounts these can be fully managed and controlled in order to provide the relevant level of control measures to ensure the safety of the students.
3. Account Management
Your school will have ownership of the email system. Tools such as acceptable use policies, automatic disclaimer statements etc,will put the school in control of how staff use the emails system.
4. Professionalism
As online communication increases, it is important to preserve a good online reputation. Therefore an .essex.sch.uk account can offer a professional email address which recipients can trust.
5. Accessibility
The email system provided via the Schools Broadband team is cloud based so can be accessed via any internet connection, be it at school, at home or on the move via a smart phone.
