50 Point Major Grade (In the margin, please give each bullet point a 1-5 rating; 5 being the highest)
Intro:
Is the intro relatively long? As in – one very long paragraph or two shorter paragraphs? One short-ish paragraph won’t cut it.
Does the intro reference the source material? (if not, look to see that it’s included later)
Does the intro THOROUGHLY contextualize the topic to the point that you as a reader are engaged, knowledgeable, and interested in proceeding?
Does the intro feel cohesive and smoothly written or is it abrupt / choppy? (look for short, simple sentences and possible places to combine)
Does the intro include the research question? And is the research question clear and concise? Do you have any suggestions for revision of the research question?
Does the intro include scholarly sources that lend credibility to the topic being discussed?
Paper:
Is the paper organized by lenses, perspectives, topics?
Do the categories make sense or do they feel forced?
Does the writer include appropriate and effective source credibility for major sources used?
Are in-text citations correct? Should be: Quote (author last name p#).
Is an abbreviated version of the article title included in the parenthetical citations if no author is given? Should look like this: Quote (“Abbreviated title” p#).
Are commas used appropriately?
Are all periods inside the end quotation mark? (no periods should be outside a quotation mark – like this “quote”.) That’s wrong.
Are semicolons ONLY used to separate two independent clauses? Especially look at conjunctive adverbs (“independent clause; although, independent clause”)
Is there any random / incorrect punctuation? If so, please fix it.
Does the writer use strong verbs/ active voice? If not, please provide suggestions.
Cut any superfluous words/ phrasing.
Does the author include adequate commentary and/or draw conclusions frequently throughout the paper or are there places where you see a disconnection between ideas?
Does the paper include implications of ideas and limitations of arguments?
Conclusion:
Is the conclusion complex and multiple paragraphs or one very long paragraph?
Does the conclusion present solutions or resolutions that are directly linked to evidence provided in the paper?
Does the conclusion cite sources?
Are the writer’s conclusions SPECIFIC and multi-faceted or are they simplistic / overly-general?
Does the paper conclude cohesively or is the ending abrupt?
Works Cited:
Are works cited in alphabetical order?
Are all periods inside end quotation marks?
Are all titles of journals / other publications italicized?
Are all titles of articles in “quotation marks”?
Are there any titles that are in ALL CAPS? If so, that’s bad – make a note.
Is everything consistent? Meaning, if web addresses are included on one source, for example – are they included in all citations?
