Purpose / This unit standard is for people working in the steel manufacturing sector.
People credited with this unit standard are able to demonstrate knowledge of: ladle furnaces; ladle furnace processes; and the measurement of performance of ladle furnaces.

Outcome 1
Demonstrate knowledge of ladle furnaces.
Evidence requirements
1.1The characteristics of types of ladle furnaces are described in terms of their function, operation, and application.
Rangeevidence is required of two types of ladle furnace.
1.2Service support systems are explained in terms of the function and inter-relationship with each other.
Rangeservice support systems include but are not limited to – electrical, control, data capture, water, fume extraction.
1.3The characteristics of ladle furnace ancillary equipment is described in terms of its function, operation, and application.
Rangeancillary equipment includes but is not limited to – lances, injectors, probes, additive weighers.
1.4The types, characteristics, and function of the refractories utilised in ladle furnaces are described in terms of company documentation.
1.5The types, function, and application of ladle furnace consumables are described in terms of company documentation.
Rangeconsumables include but are not limited to – electrodes, porous plugs lances, gases.
Outcome 2
Demonstrate knowledge of ladle furnace processes.
Evidence requirements
2.1The characteristics of ladle furnace refining are outlined in terms of the physical and chemical processes.
Rangephysical and chemical processes include but are not limited to – stirring, refining, heating.
2.2The refining additives are identified and described in terms of their application and use.
Rangeadditives include but are not limited to – recarburisers, alloys, fluxes, deoxidants.
2.3The types, identifying characteristics, and function of ladle slags are described in terms of company documentation.
Outcome 3
Demonstrate knowledge of the measurement of performance of ladle furnaces.
Evidence requirements
3.1The application and implications of performance indicators are identified and described in terms of company documentation.
Rangeperformance indicators may include but are not limited to – kWh/tonne, electrodes/tonne, residence time;
evidence of three is required.
3.2The identity, application, and effect of quality control factors for ladle furnaces are described in terms of company documentation.
Rangequality control factors include but are not limited to – chemistry, temperature, active oxygen.
