Program Committee Minutes

January 23, 2014

Attendance: Nancy Courtney, Ruth Sesco, Larry Allen, Laura Kissel, Erin Fletcher, Kathy Webb

  1. Welcome to new members and review of the committee charge: Laura and Kathy were the only new attendees
  2. New procedures for recording lectures: Larry Allen’s student records with equipment from Brian Leaf. Port production is required to edit for use if it is going to be placed in the KB. The committee needs to determine which events will be recorded. Besides the KB recordings could be placed in itunesU or linked through our uTube channel, but they would require temporary storage. Erin thought the committee should develop guidelines for the types of events we would want to preserve and the type of preservation for each. Should the libraries as a whole look at media management and storage issues in the libraries? The reason for the storage is another issue for consideration and how long it needs to be available. Nancy suggested forming a sub-group to address this.
  3. Update from Exhibits subcommittee: cannot update much as the subcommittee has not had its first meeting yet. Theatre Technology is currently displayed in the Thompson gallery now through May, and new things are on display in the showcases around the Thompson Library. Also, currently preparing for the Bill Waterson (Calvin and Hobbes) exhibition curated by Jenny Robb and theThompson exhibition curated by Caitlin McGurk Cartoon Library. In the fall the Thompson Gallery will have the Civil Rights Act exhibit which is under development now.

  1. Ideas for 2014-15 professional development programs. We’d like presentations that have more hands-on sessions or faculty/staff development attached, or that have strong interest at OSUL. They should also be related to the libraries’ strategic plan.
  2. Nancy will talk to Lisa about recommendations from Exec
  3. David Green on Ethnographic Research which is highly interdisciplinary so it might be a topic for serious consideration.
  4. Symposium on digital scholarship. 1 or 2 day event, panel discussions, etc. on a variety of topics. There are a lot of possible players for this. Exec may have suggestions for individuals to invite if they approve this event. Would speak well to the engaged librarian. It could include a component on transforming liaison roles (below)
  5. Transforming liaison roles (suggested by Lisa Carter)
  6. Big Trends…need specific ideas for this, if anyone has suggestions.
  7. Relationship Cultivation originally suggested by SarahMurphy (customer service skills forcirc desk students? Maybe in conjunction with the training committee. Nancy will ask Sarah to provide an email description of the specifics she had in mind.
  8. Academic Library Advocacy
  9. Other suggestions are welcome
