Directions:

Usingthedishclothbabyafghanpattern,caston2stitches.

Row1:Increaseinbothstitches(4stitches).

Row2:Knit2,yarnover(yo),knit2(5stitches).

Row3:Knit2,yo,knitacrossrow(note:knitinthebackofeveryyo stitchtomake“hole”larger)(6stitches).

Repeatrow3,increasing1stitchoneveryrow,untilonesideofthetriangleyouarecreatingisatleast15”long(formethiswas72stitches).

Forsmallpreemiesize(12”),thisgoesupto60stitches.

Fortinypreemiesize,workupto50stitches(10”).

Knittworowseven,by:Knit1,knit2together,yo,knitacrossrow.

Decrease row 1:Knit1,knit2together,yo,knit1,knit2together,knitacrossrow.

Repeatthisrow,decreasingonestitcheveryrow,untilyouhave4stsleft.

Last row:Knit2togtwice,slipfirststitchoversecond,andendoff.

Makeoneblanketasabove.

Makeonehalfablanketbyincreasingto72stitches(or60stitchesfor12”,or50stitchesfor10”),doingthetwoevenrows,andbindoff(makesatriangle).

Assemblyinstructions:

Laythetriangleontopoftheblanket,inthediamondshape,withthepointsofthetriangleclosesttoyou. Thisformsa“pocket”or“hood”. Cut4stripsofribbonin36”(30”forsmall,or24”fortinysize)lengths,andmatchingthe“holes”ofthetwoblanketpieces,weavetheribbonsthroughtheholesfromonecornertothenext,makingsuretheribbonlaysflat. Dothisforallfoursides,eventheoneswithoutthetoppiece,leavinglengthsateachcornerandeveningthemoutaftertheweavingisdone. Tiethetwoendsintoabowateachcorner. Usefraychecktomakesuretheendsoftheribbondon’tfray.

Layflatwith“pocket”ontopandusealengthofyarnandbluntneedleto“sew”thetwopiecestogetherabout7”(6”forsmall,4”fortiny)infromonesidecorner,sewingstraightdowntowheretheribbonsweavetheholestogether;endoff. Repeatontheotherside…thisformsanarrower“pocket”toinsertthebaby.

Make4crochetties(chain40,slipstitchbackacrosschain,endoff),ormakeribbonties,andattachinthefollowinglocations:1attopofpocketseamonrightsideofpocket(asitfacesyou),1atleftcorneredge;tiethesetwotogether. Attach1atoutsideofblanket,locatedwhereleftpocketseamis(tieitontheinside,though),and1atrightcorneredgeofblanket. Tiethesetwolast,tofoldoverbunting. (Alternatefastening:insteadofties,youcanusetwobuttons;attachonetoleftsideofstitchingforpocketinsidebuntingand“button”itthroughtheoppositecornerholewiththebow;thenattachotherbuttonto“outside”ofothersideofpocketstitchingand“button”itthroughtheoppositecornerholewithbow).

Ifbabyissmallenough,thebottombowcanbefoldedupoverfeet,andthetopbowcanbefoldeddownoverbaby’sfaceifdesired.

Note:crochetedgingaroundblankettopermanentlyattach“pocket”tothebackandgiveitsomeadditional“lace or a simplewhiteribbonadornmentforaburialbunting.Ithenaddedasmallpreemiehat/bootiesetforbabytowearinsidethebunting.
