Presidents Message
The 2006-2007 year is a milestone for all of MRC/SOT. This year marks the 25th anniversary of our chapter. Our chapter is one of the best success stories. We have had a lot of history, and, with the help of the internet, much of it has been preserved. You can see information on the history of the awardees, for example, on our website (please update your bookmarks):
We are looking to reconstruct some history that may be lost. If anyone has any information on the names of officers from past, old newsletters or meeting minutes, we can also include this in our website. Please contact me with any information.
We hope that you will be attending the Spring meeting. This meeting will be on Nanotoxicology, and will have practical information, along with research on the field. At this point, Don Korte has lined up a fantastic list of speakers, including Dr. David Hobson, who has a long history of involvement in the nanotox field and is recognized worldwide as a nanotoxiology expert. As usual, this meeting will be at the Marriott Lincolnshire. Please look in this issue for more information and registration.
We decided to change the format of the spring meeting this year. After almost 25 years of having a morning session, lunch with the business meeting, the afternoon sessions and the poster session/reception, we decided to cancel the evening reception. We just were not getting enough attendees to walk around and give the posters the attention that they deserved. Most of the posters are prepared by students, and they warrant our support. We also ended up losing a lot of money on the reception, as most of the food was left uneaten. This year, after much discussion and planning, the format was changed so that the posters would be presented immediately after the lunch and business meeting. This will be followed by additional talks, and the meeting should end by 5:00 PM.
National has put together some initiatives for this year. One is K-12 Education. It is imperative that we, as toxicologists and scientists, get to schools and talk to the students about toxicology and sciences. There are so many things that can be done at the K-12 level, including talking in classes and job shadowing. Dr. Deepa Rao will discuss this initiative at our business meeting.
For our Chapter to be considered healthy financially, we need to have 1.5 years of operating expenses in savings. We do not even have one year savings. We do not want to cut back on our programs and awards. To encourage a strong scientific program with broad participation, the registration fees for our Spring and Fall meetings cannot be priced to cover all the costs of the Chapter. Thus, we need contributions from your division or department to realize our vision and mission in the Midwest. Please help us continue to make the MRC-SOT a considerable value for you and your firm. Send your contributions to Ms. Linda Tam, Treasurer of the MRC/SOT (1228 Sherwood Rd., Glenview, Illinois60025). Sponsors can target a specific event or item, or give a general donation.
Available donations for Sponsors are as follows (co-sponsorship is also available):
Spring Meeting 2007 / Fall Meeting 2007Badges / $125 / $100
Handouts / Varies, discuss with Robin Guy
Travel for 1 speaker / $1000 / $1000

Breaks / $2000 / $500
A/V sponsorship / $1000 / $500
Also:
Breakfast at the March 2008 SOT meeting / $3000
Thank you for your support. I hope to see you all at the Spring meeting!
Warm regards,
Robin

Regional Chapter Graduate Committee (RC-GC)
Greetings Midwest Regional Chapter! My name is Kristina DeSmet and I am the Regional Chapter Graduate Committee (RC-GC) representative for the MRC-SOT. As an ad hoc committee of the national Society of Toxicology, the RC-GC was created to serve as a student liaison between the regional and national SOT chapters in order to encourage student involvement in SOT. If you are a student and have an active interest in toxicology, we encourage you to attend the next MRC-SOT meeting on May 18th, 2007 at the Lincolnshire Marriott Resort in Lincolnshire, IL. Even though you do not need to be a member of the Midwest Regional Chapter to attend the meeting or present a poster, there are several benefits to becoming a student member. Student members have access to several services provided by the MRC-SOT, are eligible for student travel awards such as the Victor A. Drill Award for best poster presentation and the Young Investigator Award for the most innovative research. You also benefit from networking with other scientists and potential employers at the regional meetings. Besides, membership dues are only $10! To become a member, download and fill out an application form from our website. Please feel free to email me with any questions.
Hope to see you May 18th!

PLEASE SUPPORT THE MRC/SOT WITH YOUR MEMBERSHIP!Not an MRC/SOT member yet? Consider joining today! The MRC/SOT is one of the largest regional chapters of the national Society of Toxicology, and we're still growing. Our large membership allows us the opportunity to deliver high quality, relatively inexpensive, local scientific meetings. Annual membership dues are still only $25, and one obvious advantage of membership is reduced meeting registration fees. More importantly. MRC/SOT membership offers invaluable opportunities to meet and interact with other area toxicology professionals. Membership application forms may be downloaded from our web page.HELP US ATTRACT NEW MEMBERS!Keeping membership at the level that we are at requires a group effort. Our Membership committee works hard to attract new members, but you can help by encouraging your colleagues to join as well. Please take the time to copy the membership application and circulate it to colleagues whom you think would benefit from MRC/SOT membership.EXISTING MEMBERS - REMEMBER TO RENEW YOUR MEMBERSHIP!For those of you who are already members, please renew promptly after receiving the renewal instructions; email renewal notifications will be arriving from national SOT soon. National SOT members can simultaneously renew their MRC/SOT membership by simply checking an additional box on their renewal form and including their MRC/SOT dues with their national dues payment. Membership can be renewed at any time by logging in to the national SOT website. Credit cards are accepted on the website!Any questions regarding MRC/SOT membership may be directed to the Membership Committee chair, Janis Eells [.
KEEP IN TOUCH WITH THE MRC/SOT
