MIJCAR says:

Do you want just a simple way to figure out the day number Or do you want a mathematical type formula?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

a simple mathematical formaula beacause i know its linked in with the time the date is'nt it its linked together

MIJCAR says:

Here is the problem. Math formulas may look simple, but some really aren't.

With something like dates, they look simple, but inside they are kind of complicated.

Like that kind of thing about adding 12 to January or February.

And then you will have to do long division and other work to get an answer.

To do it without a formula, you would have to write down 13 pieced of information.

Have is an example.

You would have to remember special numbers for the months:

Jan = 0

Feb = 31

Mar = 59

Apr = 90

May = 120

Jun = 151

July = 181

Aug = 212

Sep = 243

Oct = 273

Nov = 303

Dec = 334

Then if someone said to you "What is the day number of this year for May 5", you would do two things:

First you would add 5 to 120 and get 125.

Next you would say "this is a leap year and the month comes after February, so I will add a 1"

The day number is 126.

That's it. No formula. No division. No floors or ceilings.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

thats the type of formula id like for the whole date please it was working

MIJCAR says:

Well, I just gave it to you.

Do you know what years are leap years?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

thankyou no

MIJCAR says:

Look at the last two digits (numbers) of the year.

For example 2012. The last two digits make a 12.

Do you see that.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

yes

MIJCAR says:

2032 gives you a 32.

If 4 goes evenly into that number, then it's a leap year.

This works for all the years of this century.

So someone gives me the year 2009 and asks me "is this a leap year?"

And I look at the 2009 and take the 09.

That makes a plain 9.

Then I say to myself, does 4 go evenly into 9?

No, it doesn't.

Okay, then 2009 is not a leap year.

Get it?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

this the tpyeof formula ineed i think i understand it

MIJCAR says:

Okay, tell me. Is 2008 a leap year or not?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

8/4 =2.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

what hapenings if theres no remainder

MIJCAR says:

Then it's a leap year.

So what about 2010. is it a leap year

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

10/4=2.5 no

MIJCAR says:

right

2012 is a leap year.

So first, I look at the date 5 May 2012.

The magic number for May is 120.

Now I add the day of the month.

I add the 5.

120 + 5 = 125

Now, I ask myself is this a leap year? The answer is YES.

Next I ask myself "Does May come after February" The answer is yes!

So I add a 1 to my number.

125 + 1 = 126. Today is the 126 th day of the year.

Are you with me so far?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

yes its after that i gstuck on

MIJCAR says:

There's nothing after that. We're done with this. We have the number of the day for the year.

Let's do one together.

Someone asks you what is the calendar number for 21 Feb, 2009.

Now, what is the magic number for Feb?

You tell me.

Look at the list of numbers I gave you for the months.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

30

MIJCAR says:

Good, what is the day of the month in my question?

Do you see that it is 21

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

yes i found it

MIJCAR says:

Good. Add the 30 to the 21.

Magic number + day

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

51

its working

MIJCAR says:

Okay. Is the year (2009) a leap year?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

9/4=2.25 no

MIJCAR says:

That means you're done. The calendar day number is 51.

Ready to do another with me?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

can you link it in with the time please

is that possible

MIJCAR says:

What do you mean?

Calendar day numbers have nothing to do with the time

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

its working but im not sure wheather theres something missing

because its not quite lifted of

MIJCAR says:

Tell me something important. Are you doing this for yourself or for a class.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

sounds strange i know myself

MIJCAR says:

That's what I thought. The reason I asked was to make sure there wasn't something special a teacher was asking you to do.

It's good that you want to understand things. You can be proud of yourself. And I will try to help you.

Calendar day numbers just count how many days it has been this year up to now. The time has nothing to do with this.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

it does work the formula but its bugging me do i need t go back a date or forward a date if that makes sense or link a time formula with it

MIJCAR says:

To go back one day, you just subtract 1. to go forward one day, you just add one.

Do you have a piece of paper?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

yes

MIJCAR says:

Please write the months with their magic numbers next to them so you can see them easily.

I will wait for you.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

ok

MIJCAR says:

now let's work out the whole thing for 14 Dec, 2012.

that one was just for practice. This is for real.

First, get the magic number for Dec from your paper. Next add it to the day.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

334+14=348

MIJCAR says:

Good.

Now check for leap year.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

its yes

MIJCAR says:

Yes, it is. Last question, is December after February?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

yes

MIJCAR says:

Then add 1 to your number and you are finished.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

sorry tying to find my number

MIJCAR says:

348

Always use paper, then you won't get lost.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

can you write it out for todays date plesae i think the bits missing is you have to revrse it

MIJCAR says:

I will help YOU write it out.

Today is 5 May 2012.

Add the day and the magic month number

Use your paper, not the computer screen.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

120+5=125

MIJCAR says:

Now is it a leap year.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

12/4=3 yes

i get that far then the next bit ive got reverse it

MIJCAR says:

Last question. Does May come after February. If the answer is yes, add 1 to the number you got before.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

no

4

MIJCAR says:

I meant add 1 to the 125 you got.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

oh sory i misunderstood

so its 126

MIJCAR says:

that's it

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

how do you reverse it

MIJCAR says:

The calendar day number is 126

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

the formula thats the bit missing

MIJCAR says:

Look at the list of magic numbers. Where does the 126 fit?

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

may and june

MIJCAR says:

Good. So you know the month is May.

now subtract the magic number for May from the 126.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

i'll be back in mintue please stay on line

MIJCAR says:

ok

I am going to make things even easier. If you don't like the leap year part, do this. Copy the following Magic Numbers for Leap Year Months

Jan = 0

Feb = 31

Mar = 60

Apr = 91

May = 121

Jun = 152

Jul = 182

Aug = 213

Sep = 244

Oct = 274

Nov = 304

Dec = 335

Tell me when you're back and you have these copied onto a sheet of paper.

JACUSTOMER-qmowmkzi- says:

hi thank you im back this is brillant can you forward all this information in a email with the formula reversded please i need to get off the internet so some one else can use it but this is what i need your help has been wounderfull and it is working ! once again i cannt say thank you enough.
