DO YOU REALIZE WHAT YOU’RE EATING?(SHORTENED)

Purpose of the Activity:

To have the students learn about the nutritional value of their favorite fast foods.

To have the students understand their personal ‘Recommended Daily Dietary Allowance’ (RDA).

To have the students track and analyze a grade 9 students eating habits for ONE day

To have the students compare their personal eating habits with the recommended values.

Individually work out your RDA:

PART A:RECOMMENDED DAILY DIETARY ALLOWANCE (RDA)

Please find your correct RDA Value on the Chart.

Gender / Age (years) / Sedentary / Moderately Active / Active
Female / 14 – 18 / 1800 kcal / 2,000 kcal / 2,400 kcal
Male / 14 -18 / 2,200 kcal / 2,600 kcal / 3,000 kcal

Sedentary = light physical activity associated with typical day to day life

Moderately Active = lifestyle that includes the equivalent of PE class every day, in addition to the above.

Active = lifestyle that includes PE class activity, and team participation, in addition to day to day activities

YourRDA value is ______kcal

RDA can be further broken down into requirements for Macronutrients, Micronutrients and Fibre requirements.

RDA MICRONUTRIENT DATA

Sodium = 2500mg (maximum)

Calcium = 1300mg (minimum)

Iron = 18mg (females) 12mg (males)

Cholesterol = 300mgs (maximum)

RDA FIBRE DATA

Fibre = 30g (minimum)

Please calculate the following (use conversion chart where appropriate).

RDA MACRONUTRIENT DATA (kcal AND Grams)

55% Carbohydrates55% of RDA = ______kcal = ______grams

25% Fats25% of RDA = ______kcal = ______grams

20% Proteins 20% of RDA = ______kcal = ______grams

Using EXCEL, create 2 graphs to represent the above information.

Graph 1 = RDA Macronutrient Data(Carbohydrates, Fats & Protein)

Graph 2= RDA Micronutrient Data (Sodium, Calcium, Cholesterol & Iron notFiber)

PERSONAL DAILY FOOD TRACKING

For ONE day, students must track and record their ‘Daily Food Consumption’ (including all drinks and condiments). Students must record all of the following data:

1.Total kcal consumed: ______kcal My RDA is: ______kcal

2.Difference in your daily Kcal compared with RDA value ______kcal

3.MACRONUTRIENT DATA

Carbohydrate______kcal % of Total kcal= ______My carb RDA is: ______kcal

Fat ______kcal% of Total kcal = ______My fat RDA is: ______kcal

Protein______kcal% of Total kcal = ______My protein RDA is: ______kcal

4.MICRONUTRIENT DATA

Sodium = ______mg Calcium = ______mgIron = _____mg Cholesterol______mgs

5.FIBRE DATA = ______g

Using EXCEL, create 2 graphsto represent the above information.

Graph 1 = Macronutrient Datacomparison chart betweenkcals RDA and daily foodkcals (Carbohydrates, Fats & Protein)

Graph 2= Micronutrient Datacomparison chart between RDA and daily food (Sodium, Calcium, Cholesterol & Iron not Fiber)
