II. BECAUSE WE HAVE DIED TO SIN AND CANNOT

LIVE IN IT ANY LONGER-RM. 6:1-2

A. WHEN ONE DIES PHYSICALLY HE NO LONGER LIVES

THE LIFE HE PRIVIOUSLY LIVED

1. When one dies to sin he no longer lives the life he previously

lived

2. When one becomes a Christian, a sinner dies

B. I JN. 3:9

1. “Does not sin”-the tense is “present active endictive”

a. literally it means-one “does not keep on sinning” “does not

habitually sin

2. Why?-“seed remains in him”-has made its home in him

a. This is how the “not sinning” is accomplished-Psa. 119:11

3. “He cannot sin”

a. Does this mean one cannot commit a single sin?

b. Peter did-Gal. 2:11-21

c. John says-I Jn. 1:8-10

d. Children of God do commit momentary acts of sin, but they

CAN not live, lives of sin

d. There are many instances recorded of children of God who

became involved in sin-I Cor. 5; Acts 8; 2 Tim. 4:10

1. Some of these repented

4. Further, many passages stress that it is possible for a child of

God to so sin as to lose God’s favor-I Cor. 10:12; I Tim. 4:1;

Gal. 5:4; Jas. 5:19-20

5. What does “this passage” mean?-It means if one has truly been

born of God, it is not his inclination or desire to sin

III. BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN BAPTIZED-RM. 6:3-5

A. 1ST, PAUL STRESSES GOD’S TRUTH ON BAPTISM

1. The action of baptism is immersion-Rm. 6:4

a. The passage doesn’t make sense unless you think of baptism

as a burial in water

b. We don’t bury people by sprinkling or pouring a little dust

over them

c. The Greek word here means “to entomb”-One is entomb

in Baptism

2. 2nd, We notice the design or purpose of baptism-Rm. 6:3-4

a. What is found in death?-The blood was shed-Mt. 26:28

b. “Baptized into Christ”-This clearly shows that one enters

Christ in the act of baptism-Gal. 3:26-27

1) What were these people?-Sons of God

2) How did they get “into Christ?”-Gal. 3:27, 29

3. 3rd, This is not Holy Spirit Baptism-for there is no resurrection in H.S. Baptism but there is in water

baptism-Rm. 6:4-5

B. 2nd, WE ARE RAISED TO A NEW LIFE-Rm. 6:4

1. Jesus-died-buried-arose

2. We-died-was buried-Arose (new life)

3. “We should walk in newness of life”

a. The obligation to “walk in newness of life” emphasizes

that Christians are not to continue in sin

4. The Greek word translated “newness” means of a “different

nature”

a. It is a life that has never existed before

b. The new life is not the same as the old sinful life

c. It is new in quality

d. The old wicked man lied,stole,drank,lusted

e. But the Christian is new in Character-He does not continue in those previous sins

IV. 3RD, DEAD TO IT-RM. 6:6-7

A. IF WE HAVE BEEN UNITED WITH CHRIST, WE

UNDERSTAND THAT SEVERAL THINGS HAVE

HAPPENED

1. We understand that our old man was crucified with Christ

Rm.6:6; Gal. 2:20-In what sense?-Col. 3:5-6

2. “that the body of sin might be done away with”-Rm. 6:6;

Col. 2:11-13

3. He goes on to say “henceforth we should not serve sin”-Rm.

6:6

V. 4TH, BECAUSE WE HAVE BEEN FREED FROM SIN-RM. 6:7

A. BECAUSE WE WERE FORGIVEN OF ALL SIN

1. Listen to this list of sins, the Corinthians had been forgiven

Of-I Cor. 6:9-11

VI. 5TH, BECAUSE WE ARE LOOKING FORWARD TO

SOME DAY LIVING WITH HIM-RM. 6:8-11

A. WE ALL KNOW THAT SOME DAY OUR BODIES WILL

LAY SILENT IN THE GRAVE

B. WE SHALL LIVE WITH HIM IN ETERNITY IF WE ARE

RAISED TO THE NEW LIFE AND ARE WALKING IN IT

C. NOTICE THE EXHORTATION IN VS. 11-13

VI. 6TH, PAUL STRESSES THAT IN BECOMING A CHRISTIAN ONE IS RAISED TO “WALK IN NEWNESS OF LIFE”-THE N.T.
