District Governor Newsletter-Doug Simpson, Issue 1

Club Visits This first month has been a whirlwind as I have completed almost half of my official Club visits. Thank you for making me feel welcome at your meetings. I’ve learned about so many creative, low-cost fundraisers and projects that I will be highlighting them in my next Newsletter.

Former RI President to Visit District

Rajendra K. Saboo, RI President 91-92, will attend our District’s inaugural Foundation appreciation dinner.

Past RI President Saboo is Chairman of Saboo Business Group which includes Kamla Dials and Devices Limited, manufacturers of watch dials and components, Saboo Coatings Limited, and retail chain ETHOS.

Foundation Celebration-Please join me for this Foundation Dinner in Alliance. We will showcase what the Foundation has done in the world partnering with our District.

The price is $10.00 per Rotarian, guests are invited at no charge.

Wednesday, August 5th at Courtney’s Banquet Center, 981 East State Street (SR 62) Alliance. 6:00-9:00pm.

PDG Donald McTigue

passed peacefully away at his home Wednesday, July 26. He is survived by his wife Mary Lee, five children, and ten grandchildren. Many District Rotarians knew him by his nickname, Ducky, but most will remember his very gracious personality and kindness he showed anyone he came in contact with. As Charter member of the Girard-Liberty Rotary Club, his life embodied true spirit of Rotary in “Service above Self” that eventually led to his being elected the District Governor for the 1981-82 Rotary year.

District Governor Applicants- The District is looking for District Governor Applicants for Rotary year 2012-2013. Applicants should be a full term club President and have had some experience at the District level. Please ask your current President for the application and forward to PDG Jim Tallman @

Rotary 6650 has almost 100 members in a District 6650 group. Make new connections, and catch up with old friends. Fun! Fellowship! Great photos!

Youth Exchange-District 6650 is sponsoring 23 Outbound Exchange Students this year. Our students will be living in Argentina, Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Chile, Finland, France, Germany, India, Japan, Mexico, The Netherlands, and Spain.

This month’s spotlight is on France. We are sending two students to France this year. Drew Bostwick, sponsored by Salem, will be hosted by District 1770. Matthew Morgan, sponsored by Wooster, will also be living in France. They leave for France on August 25th. We are hosting French students Adrien Tanguy in Dover, and Loren Mayala in Alliance.

Venue Change-Due to a scheduling conflict, Youth Exchange Orientation will be at the Salem Community Center instead of Camp Stambaugh. Everything else remains the same. Orientation is mandatory for Inbounds and Host Families per RI, and the State Department. Orientation is August 22, from 10:00am-Sunday, August 23, at 9:00am. The parents’ meeting is Saturday from 11-1, and includes lunch.

GSE Team going to France- Hank Conrad of Poland Rotary is our District’s GSE (Group Student Exchange) Chairman. This year’s GSE team will head to District 1770, France, for a wine-based vocational exchange. Please contact Hank for more information at .

Membership- Membership is always a concern for Clubs. To keep membership up and interested, try to plan some fun events at your meetings. Special membership meetings and events need to make the prospective members interested enough to want to join a great organization. Ask other Clubs what they do for fellowship. Salem holds ‘socials’ at members’ home, while the Mahoning County Clubs participate in a monthly ‘Pub Night’ at different restaurant/lounges. My wife and I have attended Club picnics and we’ve been invited to corn roasts and family gatherings.
