Last Week’s Meeting-

House for Homeless Youth

Prior to this week’s meeting members attended the official opening of the newest House for Homeless Youth at 45 Cadorna Street , Box Hill South. This was the latest house set up by the Foundation for Homeless Youth an initiative of Dr John Hall and the Rotary Club of Oakleigh in 1993 when they set up 2 buildings, one in Oakleigh and another in Clayton. Since then another 14 houses have been established across the state. The Rotary club of Nunawading has been the only club involved in 2 houses the first being in Vermont in 1997.

Cadorna Street House for Homeless Youth in Box Hill South.

It was during the establishment of the first house in Vermont that John Francis who was fundraising chairperson at the time became involved with the Foundation for Homeless Youth coordinating the construction of the house. The project coordinator selects the land, develops the house design and organises the plans and works with the various participants including the donors to bring the house through to its final construction.

John’s organisational ability meant that the house came in on time and on budget which triggered the foundation to ask him to take on the role for other houses. Since that time John has coordinated the construction of five more houses in Shepparton, Balwyn, Geelong, Greens borough and Box Hill. In recognition of this and a host of achievements during his membership at the Rotary Cub of Nunawading the club were moved on this the culmination his work in another house to recognise his continuing leadership in and service to the community with a second Paul Harris Fellowship Sapphire. This was the first time for this club and according to Bob Hoskins this is only the second time that anyone in the district has received a second sapphire…………. Congratulations John for Leading the Way.

After John’s presentation Cheryl Wagstaff, the director of the Eastcare Network the organisation that supported the Houses of the Homeless Youth foundation gave us an insight into her organisations activities. Cheryl came from a background of psychiatric nursing, moved on to do a Masters of Social Work, was given a study grant to look at programs with young people in the USA.

EastCare’s Mission is delivering quality options to people in the Eastern Metropolitan Region through creative and responsive service provision. They achieve this by working with, supporting and advocating for:

  • People who are homeless, or at risk of experiencing homelessness or housing stress
  • Children, young people and families within the Department of Human Services Placement and Support Program area
  • Adults and young people with problematic substance abuse issues
  • Marginalised and disadvantaged people with multiple and/or complex needs
  • Adults and young people with housing or accommodation issues.

EastCare has a budget of $10 million per annum and employs a staff of 120 . Its services include :

Gateways Crisis Services

Gateways is a crisis accommodation and support service that provides an integrated crisis supported accommodation response to young families, adults and couples who are experiencing or are at risk of primary homelessness. Services include support for people in crisis, (housing, counselling, information, advocacy, referral, financial assistance, assistance to secure more suitable housing, work for the dole, chaplaincy, nursing services and Centrelink onsite visits. )

Homelessness Support & Specialist Programs

Within the EastCare Network, the Homelessness Support & Specialist Programs offer responsive service provision by providing:

  • ongoing support for people who are homeless and/or at risk of experiencing homelessness
  • support and/or assertive outreach to marginalized people with multiple and/or complex needs
  • support and advocacy for or counselling adults with problematic substance abuse issues

EastCare Housing Service

The EastCare Housing Services is funded by the Department of Human Services to respond to people who are experiencing homelessness or experiencing housing crisis. This program’s service streams are:

  • Housing Information and Referral (HIR) and
  • Tenancy Administration

Youth Services

The youth programs work with young people under statutory and protective orders and provide an Intensive Case Management Service (ICMS), a Residential and Support Service (RASS) and Specialist Youth Services (SYS) providing a range of educational and specialist assessment and consultancy programs. It is within these services that EastCare supports the young people using the Hoses for Homeless Youth.

Cheryl outlined some changes coming into effect in March following some changes in the legislation. It is hoped that services will be better able to support young people falling through the gaps who are in transition from school and the education system. Cheryl then related a case study of a teenage girl as an example of the cases seen by the service. This girl’s natural father was an alcoholic, her mother suffered from depression, drug dependency, repeated over doses and was sexually abused by her step father and an alcoholic father. When she finally received services the girl’s own violent tendencies made it difficult to integrate her with other children and carers. Eventually this girl ended up in Port Phillip prison only to die of an accidental drug overdose shortly after discharge. Cheryl said that while often the eventual outcomes are sometimes not that pretty, EastCare prides itself of being one service that will last the distance with these young people who have often experienced deprivation and abuse from an early age.

Phoebe’s Back in Town!

LOUISE from DENMARK (AKA “Phoebe”)…….Message from Max

Following the somewhat vague and tentative announcement at last week’s club meeting, we can now confirm that Louise (one of our past Exchange Students) is in Melbourne this week. She arrived on Monday evening and will depart next Sunday to attend the wedding of a friend in New Zealand.

While in Melbourne she would like to visit everyone but knows she hasn’t time, so …

a “casual BYO barbeque” is being organized to give club families an opportunity of meeting her. Details are as follows:

Next Friday evening 29th September

At the Drayton’s from 7.00pm.

If you would like to attend, please let Ann or Max know by this Wednesday evening. (Ph. 9848 9910)

Farmers’ Market

President Len announced that the Rotary Clubs of the Whitehorse Group have been awarded by the Whitehorse Council to organize the Farmers Market commencing second Sunday of November. The Council will charge a fee of $700 per Market day and the Farmers Market Committee with representatives from all the Whitehorse clubs. This Committee will choose an acceptable and appropriate name and it would most probably be just called the “Whitehorse Farmer Market”. Dick Tregear has taken on the important role of treasurer for the project. This is potentially a great fundraising activity for all the Whitehorse Clubs.

Rotary Ride for Research

Rob Henry from the RC of Boronia informed us that the next ride For Research Dollars, to Shepparton on 24th March next year will celebrate 21 years of fundraising with the ride. If you are keen to participate get your registrations in earl as there are only 70 places. Registations can be downloaded from our website.

Funnies

Embarrassing Moments

Have you ever spoken and wished that you could take the word back..or that you could crawl into a hole?

Here are the testimonials of a few people who did:

1. I walked into a hair salon with my husband and three kids in tow and asked loudly, "How much do you charge for a shampoo and a blow job?"

I turned around and walked out and never went back. My husband didn't say a word, he knew better.

2. I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. I was unhappy with the women's type I had been using. After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen who works at the store. He asked if he could help me. Without thinking, I looked at him and said, "I think I like playing with men's balls".

3. My sister and I were at the mall and passed by a store that sold a variety of candy and nuts. As we were looking at the display case, the boy behind the counter asked if we needed any help. I replied,

"No, I'm just looking at your nuts." My sister started to laugh hysterically, the boy grinned, and I turned beet-red and walked away. To this day, my sister has never let me forget.

4. Have you ever asked your child a question too many times? My three-year-old son had a lot of problems with potty training and I was on him constantly. One day we stopped at Taco Bell for a quick

lunch in between errands. It was very busy, with a full dining room. While enjoying my taco, I smelled something funny, so of course I checked my seven-month-old daughter, and she was clean. Then I

realized that Danny had not asked to go potty in a while, so I asked him if he needed to go, and he said "No." I kept thinking, "Oh Lord, that child has had an accident and I don't have any clothes with me."

Then I said, Danny, are you SURE you didn't have an accident?" "No," he replied. I just KNEW that he must have had an accident, because the smell was getting worse. Soooooo,I asked one more time, "Danny, did you have an accident?" This time he jumped up, yanked down his pants, bent over and spread his cheeks and yelled. "SEE MOM, IT'S JUST FARTS!!" While 30 people nearly choked to death on their tacos laughing! He calmly pulled up his pants and sat down. An old couple made me feel better by thanking me for the best laugh they' ever had!

5. This had most of the state of Michigan laughing for two days and a very embarrassed female news anchor who will, in the future, likely think before she speaks. What happens when you predict snow but don't get any - a true story. We had a female news anchor who, the day after it was suppose to have snowed and didn't, turned to the weatherman and asked: "So Bob, where's that 8 inches you promised me last night?" Not only did HE have to leave the set, but half the crew did too they were laughing

so hard!
