Last Week’s Meeting- Melbourne Cup Night

What is becoming a traditional Melbourne Cup meeting for the cub is held the week before the running of the Melbourne Cup. This included the partners and was held at the Clarion Hotel. Bruce Simcox had set up the evening but it took Glenys Jardine and Suzanne Murphy to decorate the room and set up a night to remember. The MC for the night was Bruce Aitkinson who demonstrated to the club an almost encyclopaedic knowledge of jokes to suit the occasion. Members were encouraged to dress for the evening with President Len allocating prizes for the Best Dressed, Best Hat, Most Provocative and Worst Yobo. Roger and Roslyn Wilson (Right) achieved a rare double with Roger voted the best dressed male and Roslyn the best hat. /
/ Glenys and Suzanne had spent much of the afternoon setting up the room for the evening and members and partners alike appreciated their efforts. Bev Hoskins had provided a restored antique rocking horse as part of those decorations. We see Suzanne Murphy (jockey) and Bev Hoskins (owner) featured on the left getting into the spirit of the evening and showing some of the effort members had put in to make the evening a success. The raffles, sweeps and trivial pursuits run during the course of the evening were very successful as a fund raising event for the club with over $500 raised throughout the night.
It was great to see that honorary member Alan Coysh attended the evening and he is pictured below appearing as though he is trying not to be too closely associated with Wayne Willoughby who looked to be enjoying his “fascinator” a little too much. . One wonders what Alan’s wife Faye would say if she caught the 2 together.
The evening followed last year’s success of one of the more enjoyable partner’s nights of recent years and Suzanne and Glenys in particular should be congratulated on their efforts to decorate the room and set up the event. Members got into the spirit of the evening with the picture below of the three amigos PP Rob McQuade ( Prize for Best Yobo) Roger Wilson (Prize for Best Male) and Max “Aces” Wittick (Prize for most provocative) affirming the fun we have a members of the Rotary Club of Nunawading /
/ With 3 of the 4 prizes for the evening shared by this group to the left the photograph the conspiracy theorists would be wondering was this simply coincidence or are we seeing the answer to would peace. One wonders how this group might solve Iraq’s problems. Would esky Rob’s diplomacy create a lasting peace, would Roger’s knowledge of Arab cultures make that break through or the negotiating skills and bull dog spirit of “Aces” Max succeed where force of arms have failed or was it simply 3 Rotarians having fun?.
