Last Week’s Meeting:

This weeks presentation was by Christopher Choy an Australian Rotary Health Research Foundation Student who is doing his PhD at the Mental Health Research Institute (MHRI) in Parkville investigating possible links to stress at critical times of the brains development as a cause of schizophrenia. His supervisor Dr Maarten van den Buuse RHSF Student PHD Mental Health and his girlfriend also attended the evening. Christopher immigrated from Hong Kong to Australia over 10 years ago and did his science degree at Monash before taking up the opportunity to research at

• Group 1 have no stresses applied as part of the research in their lives
• Group 2 are weaned prematurely from their mothers
• Group 3 are stressed n their late adolescent development
• Group 4 are weaned and stressed

Each group is followed up with a set of behavioural tests as a measure of the effect of these stressors on their “psychological development”. It would appear that group 4 struggled most with these tests. While a strong genetic component has been identified in that if one identical twin has it then approximately 50% of others will Christopher’s research may indicate that to develop schizophrenia individuals may need 2 significant stressors to occur at significant times in their lives. Christopher said that while one can theorise what this actually means it may be a model for the development of schizophrenia. John Munro our “resident” trick cyclist suggested another possible conditions could be post traumatic stress disorder.

Dr Maarten van den Buuse explained that research was often like this that our knowledge on many diseases was the collection of information from many different research projects and that knowing that this phenomenon occurs opens up more research questions which in turn expands our knowledge. He further thanked the club for its efforts in support of the foundation for without this many young researchers would not have the opportunity that Christopher has had. Christopher hopes to have completed his PhD by the end of the year. We look forward to hearing of his progress.

Schizophrenia is regarded as a condition that ranks amongst the top ten causes fro disease burden in both the developed and developing world so understanding what causes has the potential to greatly benefit our society. This is another example of how Australia’s largest non government research fund helps young researchers to get a start and develop the skills to go on and make those discoveries that benefit our community. Our club has consistently been the greatest supporter of this in our district

Inflatable donation gets Portsea Camp Directors smiling

Portsea Camp directors and Nunawading Rotarians (Russell, Sue, Glenys ans Len) came together last weekend to take receipt of a new 4.2 metre Zodiac inflatable. The boat was a donation from the club to the camp and, in the words of camp President, Geoff Secker (third from the left) “will improve the safety of large groups of children in the water and also allow us to take children for exciting rides out to Pope’s Eye”. The camp has committed to find funds for a motor and trailer but Mr Secker is confident the funds will be found. “Always when we are looking for support the community has been most generous”.

President of the Rotary Club of Nunawading, Len Brear, (fifth from the left) said the club had attended last years working bee at the camp and “became very enthusiastic about the camp’s work with disadvantaged children. We saw a list of things the camp was after and set about getting the funds together.”The club has also taken on raising funds for needy children from the Nunawading area to attend camps.

Paddy was driving down the street in a sweat because he had an important meeting and couldn't find a parking place. Looking up to heaven he said, "Lord take pity on me. If you find me a parking place I will go to Mass every Sunday for the rest of me life and give up me Irish Whiskey!"

Miraculously, a parking place appeared.

Paddy looked up again and said, "Never mind, I found one."

Father Murphy walks into a pub in Donegal, and says to the first man he meets, "Do you want to go to heaven?"

The man said, "I do, Father." The priest said, "Then stand over there against the wall."

Then the priest asked the second man, "Do you want to go to heaven?" "Certainly, Father," was the man's reply.

"Then stand over there against the wall," said the priest.

Then Father Murphy walked up to O'Toole and said, "Do you want to go to heaven?"

O'Toole said, "No, I don't Father."

The priest said, "I don't believe this. You mean to tell me that when you die you don't want to go to heaven?"

O'Toole said, "Oh, when I die, yes. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now."

Gallagher opened the morning newspaper and was dumbfounded to read in the obituary column that he had died. He quickly phoned his best friend, Finney.

"Did you see the paper?" asked Gallagher. "They say I died!!"

"Yes, I saw it!" replied Finney. "Where are ye callin' from?"

An Irish priest is driving down to New York and gets stopped for speeding in Connecticut . The state trooper smells alcohol on the priest's breath and then sees an empty wine bottle on the floor of the car.

He says, "Sir, have you been drinking?"

"Just water," says the priest.

The trooper says, "Then why do I smell wine?"

The priest looks at the bottle and says, "Good Lord! He's done it again!"

Walking into the bar, Mike said to Charlie the bartender, "Pour me a stiff one - just had another fight with the little woman."

"Oh yeah?" said Charlie, "And how did this one end?"

"When it was over," Mike replied, "She came to me on her hands and knees.

"Really," said Charles, "Now that's a switch! What did she say?"

She said, "Come out from under the bed, you little chicken."

Flynn staggered home very late after another evening with his drinking buddy, Paddy. He took off his shoes to avoid waking his wife, Margaret. He tiptoed as quietly as he could toward the stairs leading to their upstairs bedroom, but misjudged the bottom step. As he caught himself by grabbing the banister, his body swung around and he landed heavily on his rump. A whiskey bottle in each back pocket broke and made the landing especially painful. Managing not to yell, Flynn sprung up, pulled down his pants, and looked in the hall mirror to see that his butt cheeks were cut and bleeding. He managed to quietly find a full box of Band-Aids and began putting a Band-Aid as best he could on each place he saw blood. He then hid the now almost empty Band-Aid box and shuffled and stumbled his way to bed.

In the morning, Flynn woke up with searing pain in both his head and butt and Mary staring at him from across the room. She said, "You were drunk again last night weren't you?" Flynn said, "Why would you say such a mean thing?"

"Well," Margaret said, "it could be the open front door, it could be the broken glass at the bottom of the stairs, it could be the drops of blood trailing through the house, it could be your bloodshot eyes, but mostly.....it's all those Band-Aids stuck on the hall mirror.
