Last Week’s Meeting:

Dr.Michael Rowe Director of Cardiology at Epworth Eastern was the speaker for the evening. He ran through the risk factors for heart problems, some of the developments in treatment and what was happening at Epworth Eastern e cardiac facility situated at Box Hill and as one member pointed out the most likely place those members living in the Nunawading would go to if they were having cardiac problems.

Important risk factors for cardiovascular disease were

  • Genetics
Heart disease was more likely in people with a first degree relative who has had the disease. While we could do little about our genes this at least made us aware of the risk and the need to deal with some of the avoidable risk factors.
  • Smoking
The evidence is irrefutable that smoking increases the risk of heart disease. Stopping it can give some immediate benefit. Never starting decreases the risk quite significantly
  • Hypertension
This has long been known to increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. We know a lot more about how medication for this can decrease the risk of heart disease . it is particularly important that we have our blood pressure checked regularly
  • Cholesterol
There are 2 types of cholesterol. LDL (the bad cholesterol) which increases our risk and HDL (the good cholesterol) that decreases our risk. Our risk for heart disease depends on the absolute level of cholesterol. (ideally less than 5.5 mmol/l) and the relative amounts of HDL and LDL. Minimising animal fat in our diet is important as is having more fish meals (High in HDL). However many people this is not enough and treatment with medication (eg statins) helps to get the level down. Dr Rowe emphasised that while there is a small risk of side effects (particularly muscle breakdown) this is reversible and far out weighed by the benefit of avoiding one of the most common causes of death in our community.

While cardiovascular problems are a good thing to avoid if we areunfortunate enough to develop cardiovascular disease there are some amazing developments in treatment. Balloon catheterisation and stenting is now carried out as early treatment for a myocardial infarct enabling doctors to open up blocked coronary vessels and re-establish blood flow to cardiac tissue thereby minimising damage. We were shown some interesting pictures of this process occurring with patient with a recent coronary blockage.

Epworth Eastern is a private hospital facility which includes Epworth Cardiology, managed by Dr Rowe which has modern theatres equipped for Cardio-Thoracic surgery, supported by a state of the art 8 bed ICU, and 30 monitored Cardiac beds, including 6 CCU beds. The Epworth has a number ofVisiting Medical SpecialistsAccredited to perform Cardiac Catheterisation. There is also a range of Non-Invasive Cardiac Servicesor cardiac diagnostic testing for adult patients.

Tests performed include:

  • Intra operative echocardiography
  • Exercise stress testing
  • Echocardiography
  • Transoesophageal echocardiography (TOE)
  • Stress echocardiography (exercise & pharmacological)
  • Ambulatory halter monitoring
  • 24 hr blood pressure monitoring
  • ECG event monitoring

HeartSmart Program

The Epworth also runs a Heart Smart Program a six week out-patient program for patients recovering from an acute cardiac event (such as cardiac surgery, heart attack, or stent insertion), or anyone with known coronary artery disease who is interested in risk factor management. Australian researchers prove patients who have attended cardiac rehabilitation have a 35% improvement in 5 year survival.

2007 Annual District Conference for District 9810

President Len led a group of members and partners to another great District Conference at Shepparton. Members and partners who attended were John and Pat Dear, Janice Langan-Fox, Ian Armstrong and Maria Peres, Bob and Lyndy Davis, John Lynch, Graem Moorfoot, Bob and Bev Hoskins, Russel and Sue Warmington, Suzanne Murphy, Glenys Jardine and Sue De Bolfo. This year’s conference lived up to the previous year’s reputation with interesting speakers and a great social program.

Nunawading members stayed at the Wyndhamere Motel a 4 star motel within 5 minutes walk from the venue organised by PP Rob McQuade. Friday night opening ceremony was in front of the sound shell at Queen’s Park next to the conference centre and featured DG Bob Richards arriving on a horse. The Rotary International President’s Personal Representative was PDG Gulam Vahanvaty who impressed us all with his eloquent response to his welcome and later in the program with his personal insights into the Rotary movement. He particularly thanked the Rotary clubs in our district who contributed to the shelter boxes which he saw first hand during the Tsunami. The club had a stand promoting the photography course, olive oil products and the Farmers Market at the House of friendship. President Elect Russell Warmington is pictured right spruiking another customer. /
/ Key note speakers included Erik Ritman from the Mayo Clinic , Dennis Mooney from GMH Holden, Renu Sharma Upreti from the Women’s Foundation in Nepal (Pictured Left), Tom Henderson the founder of Shelter Boxes, Allan Turner from the local Zaidee Foundation promoting organ donation, Ether Wamai from the Tenderfoot Program educating poor children in Nairobi, Ron Barassi and the Kokoda Track and Kevin Bailey on East Timor. The Woamn for Nunawading were so impressed with Renu (left) that they collected $800 enough to educated a child or buy 8 pigs to provide women with the ability to feed their families
The Nunawading dinner was at the restaurant at the motel and was of a particularly high standard. Saturday Night’s theme was “Something Silver”. The Nunawading crew were outfitted in silver hats, black and silver check ties for the men and black and silver shawls sown by Bev Hoskins. The dinner featured “On the Prowl” a band headed by Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wild two consummate showmen. Ask any of us who went and they would say they had a great time. Next year’s conference will be held during the long week end in March so plan to go now. The picures below feature John Dear the coolest dude in the club, the set p in the hall and 2 group shots to the right. /

Greetings President Len and members, Rotary Club of Nunawading.

Sincere thanks to you for your generous support for RAM's Adopt AVillage initiative.

The use of insecticide treated bed nets is having a marked effect on mortality and morbidity in malarial endemic areas. Children especially are surviving. They are protected from malaria and are able to withstand the other childhood diseases which attack weakened bodies. Your club is making a difference. In due course you will be advised of the name of your village in the Solomon Islands - although this may take a little longer than usual because of the tsunami. We know that we have suffered equipment losses in the Giso area but the GuadalcanalProvince where we are concentrating our village activities, is probable less affected.

FUNNIESThe Devils in the Detail

While on his morning walk, Prime Minister John Howard falls over, has a heart attack and dies. His soul arrives in Heaven and he is met by St. Peter at the Pearly Gates."Welcome to Heaven Mr. Howard," says St. Peter "Before you settle in,we'll need to sort out just what to do with you, we rarely see any Liberals around these parts"."No problem St. Peter, just let me in; I'm a good Christian; I'm a believer," says the PM."I'd like to just let you in John, but I have orders from God Himself.

He says that since the implementation of his new HEAVENCHOICES policy, you'll have to spend 24-hours in Hell and then 24-hours in Heaven. After that, you must choose where you'll live for eternity.""But I've already made up my mind. I want to be in Heaven," replies Howard."I'm sorry... but we have our rules," St.Peter interjects...... and, with that he escorts the PM to an elevator which takes him down, down, down... all the way to Hell. The doors open and the PM finds himself on a lush golf course.

The sun is shining in a cloudless sky and the temperature is a perfect 22degrees.In the distance is a beautiful club-house and standing in front of theClubhouse is Bob Menzies and thousands of other Liberalluminaries including Harold Holt, John Gorton, Billy McMahon, etc.All the Liberal Party leaders are there... everyone's laughing, happy, and casually but expensively dressed.Mr. Howard is warmly greeted and spends time reminiscing about the goodtimes the Libs had getting rich at the expense of the suckers and peasants. In the afternoon they play a friendly game of golf and then all dine on caviar and lobster.

The Devil himself comes up to Howard with a frosty drink, "Have a tequila and relax, John!""Uh, I can't drink anymore, I took a pledge," says Howard, dejectedly."This is Hell, son. Drink and eat all you want, it just gets better from here!"Howard takes the drink and finds himself liking the Devil, who he thinks is a very friendlybloke who tells funny jokes and pulls hilarious nasty pranks, kind oflike the ones the Liberals pulled with the GST and the Free Trade Agreement promises.

They are having such a great time that before he realises it, it's time to go.Everyone gives him a big hug and waves as Howard steps on the elevator and heads upward.

When the elevator door reopens, he is in Heaven again and St. Peter is waiting for him."Now it's time to visit Heaven young Johnny," the old man says, opening the Pearly Gates. So for the next 24 hours the PM hangs out with a bunch of honest,

good-natured wholesome folk who enjoy each other's company, talk aboutthings other than money and treat each other decently, no fancy countryclubs here and while the food is OK, it's not caviar or lobster. But these people are all plain average. He doesn't see anybody he knowsand he isn't even afforded special treatment!"Whoa," he says uncomfortably to himself. "Bob Menzies never prepared me for this!"

The 24-hours completed, St. Peter returns and says, "Well, young Howard, you've spent a day in Hell and a day in Heaven. You must now decide where you wish to reside for eternity."With the 'Deal or No Deal' theme playing softly in the background,Howard reflects for a minute ... then answers: "Well, I would never havethought I'd say this -- I mean, Heaven has been delightful and all -- but Ireally think I belong in Hell with my friends."In a flash St.Peter escorts him to the elevator and down, down, down, he goes all the way to Hell.

The doors of the elevator open and he is in the middle of a barrenscorched earth covered with garbage and toxic industrial wasteland, reminiscent of the eroded, rabbit and fox affected Australian outback.Horrified to see all of his friends, dressed in rags and chainedtogether, picking up the roadside rubbish and putting it into black plasticbags, groaning and moaning in pain, faces and hands black with grime, ashocked Howard looks towards the Devil for an explanation...The Devil strolls over to Howard and puts a reassuring arm around his shoulder."I don't understand," stammers a shocked PM, "Yesterday I was here andthere was a golf course and a club-house and we ate caviar and lobster andI drank tequila. We chatted and had a great time. Now there's just awasteland full of garbage and everybody appears so miserable!"The Devil looks at him, smiles slyly and purrs,"That's because yesterday we were campaigning - but today you voted for us!"
