Distance and Displacement

Errands

Jennifer and Gary wanted to have some friends over for a barbeque at Jennifer’s before they all went back to college. They decided to do some shopping on Friday morning before Jennifer went to work at the Smith Haven Mall.

Gary picked up Jennifer at her house at 9:30 am and they drove 2.5 miles west in 10 minutes to Wal-Mart for some cushions on sale. They left Wal-Mart at 10:15 am and went 2 miles east and 1.5 miles north to Home Depot for a new umbrella to put over the picnic table. There was construction on Middle Country Road so the trip to Home Depot took 20 minutes. From Home Depot they went 1.5 miles east to the 7-11 to buy some Coca-Cola. The trip took 5 minutes.

They next traveled 1 miles west and .5 miles south to King Kullen to buy snacks and paper plates. The trip also took 5 minutes.

Jennifer asked to drive 2 miles south and 1 mile east to the dry cleaner to puck up her outfit for work. The drive only took 10 minutes, but now it was 11:40 am and Jennifer had to be at work at noon. They traveled the 3.5 miles north and the 1.5 miles west in 12 minutes to the Smith Haven Mall, to drop Jennifer off. Then Gary drove back to Jennifer’s house to unload the car. The trip back took 25 minutes.
