Ralph is mending – slowly.

Leanne is down-and-out with a flu bug.

Mike Harrigan (former long-time member) is doing pretty good for an old guy.

ROTARY CLUB OF LANTZVILLE
MISSION STATEMENT
Joining in fellowship to support growth and development in education and health for those less fortunate in our local and international communities.

Presidential Observations

President Lorie blamed the fog and icy roads for the small turnout this AM.

She was honored and pleased to represent our Club at the opening, by BC’s Lt Governor, of the library at the Nisaika Kumtuks Elementary Centre last Tuesday. Collectively, Rotary Clubs in Nanaimo and Victoria contributed $7,000 towards the library, the 16th in BC to be opened under the “Write to Read” program.

FOUNDATION

$50contributed to the Rotary Foundation this week. THANK-YOU!

As of December 21st, all donations will be directed to the PolioPlus Fund. If you’d like your contribution to go elsewhere talk to Barry.

Sergeant-at-Arms

Doug S was the Sergeant this week, back from an interesting weekend in Ottawa, but he didn’t go to the Grey Cup. Lots of sad dollars – this was Bob M’s last meeting. Lots of happy dollars foreverything Bob M has done for our Club over the past 23 years. Don Cwas the winner of this morning’s draw!

Breakfast at the 7-10 Club

Thanks for your support!

Always lots of dishes to be washed…

Next breakfast – Saturday, December 23rd.

News, Updates & Reminders

New weekly dues. The ABC Restaurant has had to raise the cost of breakfast. So, very reluctantly, we have had to raise our weekly dues, the first time since 2010.

Effective Jan 4th, 2018 the cashier will be looking for $15 for the “regular” breakfast and $12 for the “continental/light” breakfast.

December 14th – our annual Christmas Dinner at the Nanaimo Golf Course has been cancelled. Not enough people signed up.
  • Breakfast with Santa. 8AM, Saturday, December 9th at the Costin Hall in Lantzville. An enjoyable way to spend a few hours – service to our community and great Rotary fellowship.
  • Brian R confirmed that Fairwinds confirmed that we can ‘use’ their golf course for Boxing Day Golf (December 26th) and New Year’s Day Golf (January 1st, 2018) again. With some generous golfers and good weather (cross your fingers) we raise a few dollars for Community Service. Pass the word to your family and friends, especially those ‘down east’…
  • Golf Committee Meeting. The kick-off meeting for our 2018 Tournament will be Monday, December 18th. It’s our biggest fund raising event of the year and we need your support and input – in particular, who do you think should be the major beneficiary this year?

Community Service

Dale tabled two notices of motion for consideration next week:

$2,000 from General Funds to the Nanaimo & District Hospital Foundation towards emergency lighting for their OR.

$1,000 from Gaming Funds to Pleasant Valley and Rock City Community Schools towards their community programs.

He also proposed that the Island Crisis Centre be the major beneficiary of our 2018 Golf Tournament.

Rotary Minute

Why did you join Rotary?

Why have you stayed in Rotary?

How have you benefited from being a Rotarian?

We’ll hear from Leanne at a later meeting.

Guatemala Update

Louise Sosa, from Aldea Maya, was in Guatemala in October and, among other things, checked out our sewing facility (our District Community Grant project last year).

Some concerns – although it is busy, production is not at the level expected. The village is running the project themselves. The lady in charge wants to expand it to 12 (from 6) participants – but it could be a challenge to provide proper training.

Louise was asked to provide a few more details about what the project is actually doing…

Aldea May is a registered society that has been active in Guatemala since 201, successfully addressing educational challenges and other issues in the village of Chuk Muk, devastated by a landslide.

A Rotary Challenge

Don’t forget DG Tom’s wife, Laurie’s, challenge to every Rotarian in district 5020 to donate two children’s books to a worthy cause. Dawne N has talked to Seaview in Lantzville – about books to support their anti-bullying campaign – and will get more details.

GREAT TRUTHS THAT ADULTS HAVE LEARNED:
1) Raising teenagers is like nailing Jello to a tree.

2) Wrinkles don't hurt.

3) Families are like fudge...mostly sweet, with a few nuts.

4) Today's mighty oak is just yesterday's nut that held its ground.

5) Laughing is good exercise. It's like jogging on the inside.

6) Middle age is when you choose your cereal for the fiber, not the toy.
