Disclosure statement –Mrs. Van Orden 11th grade English

Blog: blog.wsd.net/jvanordenemail:

Welcome back to school! In this class, students will work on the school-wide “Desired Results for Student Learning,” which are literacy, critical thinking, and citizenship. Students will also prepare for the English and reading sections of the ACT test and work through the Utah Core Standards for English Language Arts. Be prepared to read and write a lot in this class.

These are the rules to which students need to adhere:

  • Show respect forme and each other. Respect encompasses appropriate words, actions, and body language.
  • Wear your school ID each day.
  • Be on time and prepared each day. Also, respectfully participate in class discussions (please wait to be called on before speaking).
  • Refrain from bringing food and drinks to class. (Water in a clear bottle is ok.)
  • Cell phones are to be turned OFF during class time, unless I haveinstructed students to use a web browser for an assignment in class. Having the phone out whennot allowed in class will result in the phone being confiscated and turned into the administration. This will also result in a drop in citizenship grades. Students who want to use the calendar function on their phones in class must first request permission to do so.
  • Follow the school dress code, including not wearing hats, bandanas, hoods, headbands, and other headwear. (The dress code is available to read in the school planner or from the office.)
  • Please use a black or blue pen or mechanical pencil. (Regular pencil gets smeared and is hard to read.)
  • You will also need a composition notebook for this class (which will stay in class).

Citizenship grades will reflect how well students have kept their classroom citizenship responsibilities. Attendance credit will be as per Weber High School and Weber District policy.

Academic grades will be based on the following percentages of points earned:

  • 100%--94% A 93.99%--90% A- 89.99%--87% B+
  • 86.99%--83% B82.99%--80% B-79.99%--77% C+
  • 76.99%--73% C72.99%--70% C-69.99%--67% D+
  • 66.99%--63% D62.99%--59% D-58.99% and below: F
  • If you have a legitimateabsence, you have five school days (one week) in which to make up the workthat we did in class without a penalty. After that one week, the work handed in will be late. If homework was due on the date you were absent, then that homework needs to be turned in the very next class period. Otherwise, that work will be late.
  • When you are absent, please have your parents call Mrs. Knight, the attendance secretary, to excuse your absence. Otherwise, if your parents haven’t called in about your absence, you are considered truant and will not be able to make up the work that was given on that day, and any work that was due that day will be considered late when it is handed in later. The school phone # is 801-476-3700.
  • If you have missed a test or quiz, you need to make an appointment with me to make up that testor quiz within one week. You may be given an alternative test or quiz if you have missed the original.
  • EO hour (Monday afternoon) is a perfect time to make up work or tests.
  • Late Policy: Homework, projects, essays, and other outside assignments will be due at the beginning of class on the due date. If you are not prepared with homework, you may turn it in within the next two class periods for 50% off your earned grade. If you have extenuating circumstances, you must talk to me before the original due date.
  • Retesting will be allowed on skills-based tests and quizzesonly (grammar and vocabulary). You may only retake a test if you score below 70% on the original test. When you retest, no matter what you score, you will receive an average of the first and second score. Other tests (such as on novels, etc.) may NOT be re-taken.
  • Check your grades periodically through the portal. The office can assist you with your password if you do not know what it is. Late work and absent work will be put into the grades approximately once a week. Keep all work that is handed back to you. This is your proof of completion of work (and score given) should a question arise.
  • Any instances of plagiarism, cheating, or assisting another student in cheating will result in no credit for that assignment or test and a “U” in citizenship. This includes using your phone at all during a test.
  • I will send out occasional reminders through the district’s “MyConnect” system. I’ve included information regarding joining the list for this period. (Reminders will be automatically sent out to students’ district email address and also to any parental email addresses already in the school’s system.)

Parents/Guardians, please sign the last page of this document and have your student return it to me. It is worth points for him/her to do so. Thank you. Also, please let me know if you have any questions or concerns during the school year. (Email is a great way to reach me—) I’m excited to work with you and your student!
