Disaster Recovery

Concept:

Throughout this Unit of Inquiry the students will learn about Natural Disasters and how they can affect the lives of many people.

Project:

For this project students will research a particular global disaster, man-made or natural using the internet, magazine articles, or related books to show how lives were impacted by the affects of that disaster. The project will consist of a typed report, oral presentation, survival kit, and escape plan.

Typed Report/Oral:

The typed portion will need to give facts about the disaster. Explain the type of disaster, how the people recovered, what could have been done differently, and where they are now (example: how many people died, are they still rebuilding city, how many people are still displaced). The student will need to be able to articulately present their research to the class without reading their essay. The student’s oral presentation should display their knowledge and understanding of their research.

Survival Kit/Escape Plan:

The survival kit will be a kit put together by the students using objects that would help them to be prepared in case of a natural disaster. The kit can include such things as water, food, clothing, flashlight, radio, etc. Allow your student to be creative and practical in their presentation of their kit. It should be a tangible.

Inside the kit, the student should have their “escape plan.” This plan can be in a map form, bulleted, or pictured steps.
