Aquaculture Systems Technologies, LLC (AST) founded in October 1995 is the exclusive manufacturer of several patented Bead Filter Technologies, which include Propeller-Washed Bead Filters, Bubble Washed Bead Filters and PolyGeyser Bead Filters. Bead Filters are used as both mechanical and biological filters on recirculating system holding a variety of fish and animal species. These filters utilize floating plastic beads in an up-flow configuration. The bead media has a very high specific surface area of 400 ft2/ft3 for bacterial attachment. Bead filters also capture 100% of solids 50 microns or greater per pass and 45% of particles in the 5-10 micron range per pass. In addition to AST’s role as a manufacturer of Bead Filter Technologies, the company is involved in the research and development of new technologies to solve problems/issues in the continued evolution of recirculating aquaculture systems. Currently AST has several research grants funded through the SBIR Grants from National Science Foundation and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. These include grants to develop computer automated live feed production systems for both algae and zooplankton as well as a novel approach to dentirification which utilizes a biodegradable polymer to provide both the media and carbon source for nitrate and phosphate removal.
