Director, Special Events


Reports to: Associate Vice President, Special Events

Status: Permanent, Full Time

Description: The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation’s Special Events team is a dynamic group who support more than 100 community events annually as well as our own signature and partnership events to raise money for breakthrough research and patient care at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre - one of the top 5 cancer research centres in the world. The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre is part of the University Health Network.

Job Summary: The Director, Special Events is a newly created position on the Special Events Team. You will develop, oversee, deliver, and monitor Special Events programs which will include galas, golf tournaments, dinners, fashion and sports events and other events.

Key Responsibilities:

·  Leadership role for the team

·  Direct reports within the Special Events team, includes coaching, mentoring and managing performance expectations

·  Manage a portfolio of existing events as well as the creation of new events from concept to execution

·  Monitor event budgets for all events in your portfolio as well as Coordinator portfolio’s to ensure targets are met

·  Develop and monitor critical path, timelines and checklists for events and ensure deadlines are met as required for your events and Coordinators and volunteers

·  Develop and present sponsorship opportunities for the events in your portfolio

·  Monitor and develop social media accounts for projects you work on

·  Work with volunteer committees

·  Develop and manage relationships with vendors, internal and external suppliers, negotiating contracts as necessary

·  Prepare and present presentations, proposals and thank you speeches as necessary

Skills

·  Demonstrated ability to create and execute an event

·  Demonstrated leadership skills

·  Demonstrated ability to coordinate and motivate volunteers and staff

·  Strategic planning, prioritization and goal setting for events

·  Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines

·  Demonstrated ability to be a resourceful, creative and innovative thinker

·  Ability to work independently and as a team member

·  Excellent written and verbal skills, including presentation skills

·  Excellent computer skills in Microsoft Office applications

·  Knowledge of Raiser’s Edge

·  Knowledge of on line fundraising tools (AKA Raisin)

Qualifications:

·  University degree or community college diploma in marketing, business, event management or fundraising.

·  10 years or more experience in event coordination with direct experience working with a not-for-profit organization demonstrating increasing responsibilities

·  Experience working with web fundraising tools and social media is essential

·  Experience working with and managing volunteer committees and volunteers

·  Willingness to work non-traditional hours

·  CFRE accreditation is an asset
