Director, Medical Staff Services – Northwest Community Healthcare – Arlington Heights, IL

Reporting directly to the Chief Medical Officer/EVP, serves as a liaison between the Medical Staff, Administration and other departments. Develops and implements goals and objectives, programs, activities, budgets, policies and procedures for the Medical Staff and directs the operation and services of the Medical Staff Services department.

1. Provides leadership and support for Medical Staff compliance with the accrediting and regulatory agencies (i.e. The Joint Commission), credentialing and medical staff policy issues and/or staffing/management functions. Maintains working knowledge of the Medical Staff governing documents (i.e. Bylaws, Credentials Policy, Rules and Regulations, etc.).

2. Assists Medical Staff Leadership in the development, implementation and adherence to the medical staff organization governing structure and all related documentation and regulatory requirements. Arbitrates issues between physicians and the hospital that are confidential, sensitive and controversial and escalates to Medical Staff Leadership as appropriate. Attends medical staff meetings as required.

3. Provides a high-quality single application process for medical staff membership and clinical privileges for physicians and other health care providers in an effective and cost-effective manner. Establishes programs and processes that position the Medical Staff Services department as in house resource, liaison, and partner for the medical staff leaders.

4. Improves and promotes communication strategies and teamwork among the various medical staff departments, and between medical staff leadership and medical staff departments.

5. Develops and enhances processes to better facilitate communication, workload and outcome.

6. Oversees the Medical Staff credentialing and privileging processes, peer review process and ongoing Medical Staff performance monitoring. Develops and implements standards applicable for/to medical staff members relating to credentialing and administrative functions.

7. Oversees medical staff service professionals proving support and services to the medical staff organization ensuring continuity in services, elimination of redundancy, and consistent documents, policies and procedures. Interviews, hires, disciplines and terminates (when necessary) subordinate clinical personnel. Evaluates the performance and productivity of staff according to the guidelines of the hospital's performance management system. Ensures employees are oriented to the departments and hospital, including safety and infection control policies and procedures. Collaborates with personnel responsible for organization-wide education to assure learning needs are identified and addressed.

8. Acquires and maintains state-of-the-art knowledge and serves as a consultant on issues related to Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations. Provides guidance and serves as expert resource to the medical staff organization and hospital in these areas.

9. Directs staff in the conduct of all disciplinary corrective actions, hearings, and appeals to the Hospital Authority. Consults with legal counsel, hospital and medical staff leadership to ensure compliance with substantive and procedural due process requirements applicable to Federal/State Laws, Medical Staff Bylaws, Rules and Regulations and other applicable policies and procedures. Guides the Medical Staff in concert with legal counsel, through disciplinary processes involving physicians and allied health professionals. Maintains the official record of all proceedings.

10. Oversees the Continuing Medical Education (CME) Program and its activities including program accreditation, appropriateness of educational activities, monitoring and evaluation of activities and the program according to ACCME guidelines in concert with the CME Director.

11. Adheres to all Northwest Community Hospital standards, policies, and procedures.

Qualifications:

1. Bachelor’s degree in health care related field, or an equivalent combination of training and experience.

2. Minimum of 7 years comprehensive progressively responsible experience as a medical staff professional within a hospital setting required.

3. Previous supervisory experience required.

4. Certification by NAMSS (National Association Medical Staff Services) is preferred (i.e. CPMSM).

5. Previous experience developing medical staff services policies and procedures.

6. Working knowledge of credentialing and privileging, and comprehensive knowledge of state/federal regulatory requirements and related

laws, rules and regulations.

7. The interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with all levels of the organization including physicians and outside agencies.

8. The communication skills necessary to present information in a clear, concise and persuasive manner.

9. The leadership skills necessary to delegate, plan, and supervise the work of others.

10. A very high level of analytical ability necessary to analyze highly complex sets of data, identify and explain variances, and provide input for

development of action plans.

11. The computer skills necessary to oversee several departmental information systems.
