Directions for Zoom Recorder

To record and playback:

Turn power switch (left side) on. Be sure to turn off the unit when you’re finished.

Press red button two times to start recording. Press red button again to stop.

Be sure that you see the time read-out on the screen, with the numbers going up (:01, :02, :03, etc.), also, the “mic active” light will blink.

Hold the recorder so that the top edge (which says “rear/front”) is in front of the subject’s mouth, within about 6-12 inches. “Mic gain” (right side) should be on “M” (medium) in most situations. If mic for some reason is very distant from source, put on “H” (high). If sound source is very loud and close, put on “L” (low). If you put the “Mic gain” switch on any setting other than “M,” be sure to return it to “M” when you’re done.

Each new recording will be numbered (MONO-001, MONO-002, etc.). The most recent recording will have the highest number. You may rename your recordings when you download them to Adobe Audition and save them to your files.

The Zoom recorders are set to make mono, MP3 recordings. These will be the easiest to use for our purposes. DO NOT CHANGE THESE SETTINGS.

To play, recording on Zoom, press the play/pause button (>/II) at the bottom. You’ll need ear buds in order to hear the recording. Press the play/pause button again to pause, press the red button to stop.

Again, be sure to turn off the unit when you’re finished.

To download recorded items to computer:

Use the USB cable. Plug small end (narrow part at the top) into the Zoom, large end into the computer. IT IS NOT NECESSARY TO TURN POWER ON FOR THIS.

“Storage” should be the top item that appears on the Zoom screen, and it will be automatically selected. Press the red button.

Open “My Computer,” then open “Removable disk.”

Open “Folder 1.” Your recording (presumably the most recent recording on the device) will be the highest numbered recording (MONO-25, MONO-26, MONO-27, etc.).

Right click on the recording. Choose “Open with” and “Adobe Audition.” The recording will open in the Edit Mode of Adobe Audition.

Save the recording to a folder you create called “Feature” in your RTV 221 folder. From here, you can edit the piece as you wish, taking out sound bites, etc.

REMOVE THE USB CABLE FROM THE COMPUTER AND RETURN THE CABLE, THE ZOOM RECORDER AND ALL OTHER PARTS TO THE CARRYING BAG AND RETURN TO DR. DEMPSEY.

DO NOT REMOVE THE S-D CARD FROM THE DEVICE WITHOUT THE SPECIFIC PERMISSION OF DR. DEMPSEY.
