Directions for “My Representatives” Summer Assignment

For this assignment, you will create a guide that shows the 10 elected representatives that represent you, based on your address.
You will provide:

  • the title of their office
  • their party
  • # of terms they have served (including the one they are serving)
  • their picture
  • their mailing address (ideally office address)
  • a map that shows the area and/or district they serve and the # of their district
  • 3 policy positions they hold (things they think should happen, things they would vote for, policies they have proposed).Avoid just naming laws (they are usually vague sounding) and avoid "glittering generalities" ("they want a prosperous economy"). The better job you do on this now, the less painful your related assignment will be later.

Step 1: Open a Google doc.
Step 2: Get the content by doing research.
Here are the offices you are looking for:

1. President / VP of the United States (not based on address). We don't write the VP separately because he only votes when the Senate is tied - and how often does the Senate tie? Translation: Don't waste your stamp.

2. North Carolina U.S. Senator (most senior from NC) (not based on address)

3. North Carolina U.S. Senator (most junior from NC) (not based on address)

4. U.S. House of Representatives Member (will depend on your address. Usethissite)

5. State Governor (not based on address)

6. State Senator (will depend on your address. Usethissite)

7. State House Member(will depend on your address. Usethissite)

8. County Commissioner - find the one from your districthere.

9. City Council Member - pick the one from your district (there are 5). Usethissite (see address box at bottom). If you live in the county and not the city, do the Mayor.

10. School Board Member - find the one from your districthere
To get the pics you need, do the following (just in case):
- Find the picture or map and zoom in to make it big and clear.

- take a "screen shot"

- paste it in a document page and crop it.

- copy it after it is cropped.

- open "accessories" and "paint" on a Microsoft system, not sure about a Mac but I'm sure it's easy!

- paste it and save the file.
- insert an "image" block from the left margin.

- upload the image that you saved.

Step 3: Await direction from your teacher about how to turn in the assignment by the first Friday of class by 7:25 am.

You should use the "independent thought standard" when completing this assignment. We will go over this the first day of class, but in general, you are welcome to talk with other people about this assignment, but your final product and policy details should reflect that YOU did the work, not that you merely copied someone else's work.Using the same content, but just changing the wording, does NOT meet the independent thought standard. If your assignment does not meet the independent thought standard, it will not be scored and you may be referred to the administration for plagiarism. So, be careful!
To help you with this assignment, I am providing a modelas an attachment. I will do just a few examples, and they will be based on fictional characters. I am just trying to help you see the formatting. Don't pay much attention to the content. Hope it helps!
