Competency Based Training and Assessment

In addition to the above training, Joseph Rehabilitation Center provides an annual competency based training and assessment to its employees for the purpose of ensuring that they are able to demonstrate competency in their job performance which in turn will facilitate enhanced provisions of services to persons with developmental disability.

Competency Based Training and Assessment (CBTA) begin with a task analysis the step by step breakdown to be learned. Then the form is given to the employee so that they are aware of the training steps. The trainer demonstrates the steps to the employee and provides training.

The trainer provides the CBTA to the employee and demonstrates the skill to be learned. The employee demonstrates the skill learned and the trainer documented on the CBTA form the employee’s knowledge and performance of each step of the task. If an employee does not properly demonstrate the skill, the trainer reviews and re-demonstrates the skill. The employee then repeats the demonstration of the skill until he/she can demonstrate the full sequence and knowledge at 100% proficiency.

Following training, employees are given immediate feedback of their performance utilizing the training assessment form in a checklist fashion. The CBTA form is also used as a re-assessment process. Periodically the designed staff observes the employee performing the skill and documents the proficiency of each step of the task analysis. If an employee does not properly complete the task, immediate retraining is provided as previously outlined.

These training assessment forms are used on a regular and periodic basis to maintain employee competency and to provide feedback to the employee on their job performance.

Competency Based Training and Assessment utilizes a “train-the-trainer”. The training starts with Clinical Manager who will House Supervisor, QMRPs and DSPs as needed in the CBTA for which they are responsible for training others.

Information on training opportunities provided by DHS will be kept at each location, in order to facilitate accessibility to the CBTA.Once a CBTA has been completed, verbal feedback in immediately given to the employee and the form is filed in the employee’s folder. The House Supervisor and Clinical Manager are responsible for ensuring the CBTAs are completed according to the specific schedule of employee training.
