Digital Manager

CAFOD mission:to promote human development and social justice in witness to Christian Faith and gospel values.

Job purpose:The post of Digital Manager leads the Digital Team within the Creative Communications Section (CCS). The purpose of the post is to ensure the strategic development, coordination and implementation of a coherent and consistent approach to digital communications across CAFOD and to ensure that these are used to maximum effect to deliver our fundraising, advocacy, campaigning and wider educational activities.

  • To deliver high quality online content, that engages our audiences, reflects our brand, and builds our voice in the UK and internationally.
  • To ensure our digital channels are strongly linked to the current news agenda, and are focused on driving user transactions, supporting corporate priorities and building the CAFOD brand
  • To enthuse, educate and train the rest of the section and the wider CAFOD in key digital communications shifts
  • To manage a specialist team who assist and support the development of digital communications
  • To project manage some digital projects as appropriate

Accountability:

The post reports to the Head of CCS and works particularly closely with the other two team leadersin CSS and the rest of the section. The post holder will also regular contact with other CAFOD sections such as IT, Fundraising, Campaigning and Media.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

The key responsibilities for this job are:

Management

  • To manage a specialist team which includesa Web Developer, a Website Editor, a Digital Marketing and Evaluation Officer and a short-term Digital Projects Manager, promoting a positive and energetic working culture by managing their performance and professional development
  • To work with and support the other sections in CCS, which includes Audio Visual, Picture Desk, Design and Editorial Staff as well as a Digital Fundraiser who is based in the Direct Marketing Team.
  • To participate actively in the CCS Management Group with the Head of Section, Visual Communications Manager and Editorial Manager
  • To manage and monitor a budget.

Strategic development of digital media

  • To develop a clear vision for digital communications appropriate to CAFOD and its audience. To also enthuse, educate and inspire the rest of the organisation about this.
  • To hold responsibility for development of CAFOD’s digital communications, including websites, blogs, emarketing, SMS and social networks etc.
  • To keep abreast of digital developments, suggesting and promoting their relevance for CAFOD as appropriate and leading on their implementation in combination with other communication media.
  • To support the professional development of CCS staff as well as developing awareness and skills of digital communications of the organisation.
  • To have a particular focus on how digital fundraising and digital campaigning can be continually developed and improved.

Project management

  • To project manage and deliver specific projects as appropriate ( eg initially the introduction of a new CMS).
  • Develop close working relationships with CAFOD’s IT team and external suppliers to ensure a robust and secure technical infrastructure.
  • To manage technical builds for new online products sometimes using a mix of internal and external resources.
  • To manage relationships with external agencies.

Other responsibilities are to:

  • Participate in general activities of the CCS section and CSD Division.

PERSON SPECIFICATION

The highest priorities for the post holder are:
  • Excellent understanding of web technologies and their practical uses.
  • Excellent communication skills. Builds rapport and communicates effectively.
  • Working knowledge of developing a digital media strategy in fundraising or campaigning.
  • Proven ability of managing the development of web databases and systems, and new media/digital products.
  • Knowledge of PHP, My SQL, Linux, CSS, Java script, HTML, DHTML.
  • Excellent project management skills and the management of time and resources efficiently.
  • Proven Ability of working with Content Management Systems.
  • Good working knowledge of social media for communication projects
  • Shows drive and initiative; adapts easily to change

It is important that the post holder can demonstrate:

  • An understanding of CAFOD’s Catholic audience and how digital media might be used most effectively in this context.
  • Ability to work in a consultative way with in-house teams in order to helps others to achieve goals.
  • Ability to manage and coach others.
  • Sound judgement and decision making; a willingness to take ownership, to work transparently and be openly accountable.
  • Ability to negotiate and to resolve conflict successfully.

TERMS AND CONDITIONS

Contract:Permanent contract including a six-month probationary period.

Salary:Grade R:£35,180 – £38,695 inc LW (starting point according to skills and experience).

Hours:35 hours per week. Normal CAFOD office hours are 9.30 to 5.30 with one hour for lunch. This post may require occasional weekend and evening work for which time off in lieu may be taken.

Holidays:20 working days per annum plus statutory holidays plus 6 days determined by CAFOD at Christmas/Easter.

Notice period: Three months either way after completion of the probationary period.

Pensions:CAFOD will make a contribution of 10% towards a pension scheme, provided that the employee contributes at least 5%. Alternatively CAFOD will contribute to a bona fide personal pension fund.

AccessThere is access for people with disabilities to CAFOD’s Stableyard offices and there is access by way of a passenger lift to all floors in CAFOD’s main building. The first and second floors of the Worlock building, where the DM&L section is located, are inaccessible to people in wheelchairs. Access to the 21 Diocesan offices varies.
