HELP NEEDED FOR SCIENCE LOUNGE FEBRUARY 20
The theme of this Science Lounge is Space Camp. We're expecting big crowds--typically these events draw around 500-700 people. Here's where we need help:
Telescope Volunteers: We need 4-5 Telescope Volunteers to help facilitate the 'scopes for the evening. The telescopes are slated to be set-up on the new plaza of the new wing. Science On a Sphere: The facilitation might focus on the Moon (such as Apollo landing sites).
Barany Chair--we might put this outside of SO

CHANGE IN ASTRONAUT SHOW SCHEDULE
Starting on Monday, February 3rd we are implementing a new schedule for shows in Space Odyssey. This schedule shifts the Astronaut times to 10:30 and 2 during the week and 11:15 and 3 on the weekend.
PLEASE FILL OUT YOUR UPDATE FORM ASAP
These forms need to be filled out by all volunteers who started prior to June 2013. They're necessary as we had to change our waiver/liability...stuff. Please fill one out and turn it in if you haven't already. You can find blank forms at Shelley Knepley's desk Or... Click here to download the form. If you fill out the form on your machine at home, please save it on your home computer before sending it to me or otherwise it'll lose the data. Or you can just print it out and drop it off old-school style. ;) If you don't know whether you've filled one of these out, here's a list of those who still need to do so: Click here to see if you still need to fill out an update form.
RETURNING SPACE TO NORMAL
Please remember that when you use either the Galaxy Stage or the Space Screen to do a show or demonstration, to please "return space to normal" using the AMX panel when you're done. If you need help figuring this out, ask me, another volunteer or a staff person. Thanks!
TWO WAY RADIOS GET A BOOST
The radio we use to call Tech in Space O should be able to do so from inside the exhibit more reliably as they've installed a signal repeater.

Dave C. did some tweaking and this thing is now sending out foot-long sparks. Cool! Be careful. :)
2013 SHOW NUMBERS
Check out the rough count of guests who watched shows in SO in 2013, thanks to Dave C for putting this together:
We had a total of 2,193 shows averaging 6.04 per day with an average attendance of 56.48 (total attendance 123,863).
The Astronaut had the most visitors with 38,530 in attendance followed by Cruising the Cosmos (26,514), Vacuum Chamber (11,638) and Galileo (10,474).
Galileo had the largest average audience size (128.04), followed by Cruisin' (71.35), Astronaut on Mars (53.23), Weather Central (53.12) and Vacuum (51.22).
In terms of show numbers AOS of course had the most since it is scheduled twice per day (723) followed by Cruisin' (369). After that we have Vacuum Chamber (227), Superchill (162) and Pyramids (116).
NASA TV IN SPACE O
From about mid-February to mid-April, we'll have to use the laptops to stream NASA TV on any of the screens in the exhibit because the satellite dish on the roof has to be relocated for some work.

These are being ordered/replaced as we lost a couple.
NEW UNIFORMS
Does anyone out there still need a new uniform?
DOUBLE PRISM FOR EXPLORING LIGHT
The Science Museum of Minnesota has finished building this replacement for us and it's on the way.
ASTROTOT REPAIRS
We're still waiting on parts for this repair. Turns out the whole panel needs to be rebuilt. This will more than likely not happen until sometime in the middle of 2014.
SCFD COMMUNITY FREE DAYS
As part of the Museum's agreement to receive funds from SCFD, which account for a significant portion of the Museum's operating budget, the Museum offers "community free days" throughout the year to allow those who can't afford admission the privilege to visit DMNS. Below are the dates for the 2014 free days.

This training, also known as the Space Odyssey Educational Philosophy A Training, is part one of a two-part training series for all new Space Odyssey volunteers. It's a fun night where you get to learn about the reasons why we teach the way we do. Plus you'll learn new methods to educate the public and get a personal tour of the Mars diorama--you will go to Mars! This training is required of all new Space Odyssey volunteers.

Digital Earth: Floods
Using global satellite imagery, geologist Bob Raynolds and space scientist Ka Chun Yu will take you on a journey to examine flooding and extreme weather at home in Colorado and around the world. Get a global perspective on both the causes and consequences of disasters, such as the recent typhoon in the Philippines, and explore the connections between these widespread weather phenomena.Location:

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR SCIENCE ON THE FLY
The opening of the Morgridge Family Exploration Center (the big addition on the south side of DMNS) is right around the corner! We have designed a brand new experience geared toward general admission families that will take place daily in the Atrium called Science on the Fly. We are looking for energetic, enthusiastic volunteers to help us bring this program to life. Maybe that's you!
Science on the Fly will be a two part program that includes an interactive show facilitated by our dynamic Museum Programs staff, and interactive Exploration Stations facilitated by volunteers and staff. The program focuses on the incredible science behind flight, how it works, and the many different kinds of fliers---both animal and man-made. Guests will enjoy a daily "high point" experience that features spectacular science and visuals that will create lasting memories. Word-of-mouth about the show will travel lightning fast as people have amazing experiences.
If you are interested in sparking guests' curiosity through intriguing crafts, wind tunnels, try-on wings and Education Collections, consider signing up to help with Science on the Fly Exploration Stations! The shift time is 2:30-4:30 p.m. daily. You may choose to come in specifically for this program, or you can talk to your coordinator about the possibility of fitting this into your current afternoon volunteer shift.
