Digital Adjustable Delay Timer Kit 109

Introduction

Welcome to the exciting world of Circuit Creations electronics kits. To assemble this kit you will need the following basic items- 25W to 40W soldering iron, rosin core flux solder, diagonal cutters to trim excess lead length after soldering, and needle nose pliers for lead bending.

The central component of this kit is the PIC16F1826 microcontroller. The extensive capabilities of this microcontroller have been pre-programmed to provide a timer with digital delay adjustment. This kit is a great building block for projects to create a time delayed switch, use in automobile for delayed lighting or wipers, as part of a gaming application, camera timer, on/off timing for appliances… Your imagination is the limit for what can be done with this kit.

Digital Adjustable Delay Timer K109 Features

Operation

/ Do not use the K109 Digital Adjustable Delay Timer with any life support system or any other application where unintended operation might cause harm to people or damage property. Always exercise caution when connecting the K109 circuit to any other circuit.

Connect a DC voltage, such as a power supply, battery, or Circuit Creations Power Supply Kit 101, between 3 Volts to 12 Volts to the VIN and GND inputs of J1.

The timer value is set by the Switch S1 Settings 1 to 8 as listed in TABLE 2 and TABLE 3 below.

There are 4 active outputs for this circuit.

OUTPUT / PAD / OUTPUT DESCRIPTION
LED / RA2 / The LED output illuminates the red ACTIVE LED while the delay timer is activated. This signal can also be used as a timer ON output.
LCH / RA3 / The LCH output is initially low when the circuit is powered up and will be set to a high of 2.5V when the timer delay interval has completed. The LCH output will remain high until it is reset by either removing power from J1 or changing any of the S1 switch settings as long as a new timer interval has not been started.
OC_OUT / OC_OUT / The OC_OUT output is an open collector output that is open when the timer delay interval has not completed and is pulled low when the timer delay interval has completed. The OC_OUT output can be used to connect to higher power circuits such as a relay.
BASE_ PERIOD / RA6 / The BASE_PERIOD output signal toggles once the delay timer interval has been triggered and is low otherwise. The period depends on the settings of S1-1 and S1-2 of switch S1 as follows:
*  Seconds: BASE_PERIOD = 0.5 seconds
*  Minutes: BASE_PERIOD = 30 seconds
*  Hours: BASE_PERIOD = 60 seconds
*  Days: BASE_PERIOD = 60 seconds

TABLE 1 – Circuit Output Descriptions

Switch position 1 and 2 of S1 determines the basic units of the delay timer.

S1 - 2 / S1 - 1 / BASIC UNITS OF TIMER MODE
ON / ON / Seconds
ON / OFF / Minutes
OFF / ON / Hours
OFF / OFF / Days

TABLE 2 – Timer Basic Units Mode Description

The components of the circuit operate over a temperature range of 0C to 60C (32F to 140F). No calibration is required for the K109 digital adjustable delay timer kit. When the push button is pressed the timer interval will begin. An electronic trigger that goes from 2.5V to 0V connected to the RA0 pad will also activate the timer. The minimum trigger width is 5mS and the maximum is 100mS less than the selected time interval for both the push button and electronic trigger. Changing the switch S1 settings will only take affect when no delay timer interval is active (i.e. the LED is off).

The PCB for this kit has been designed to allow for flexibility and experimentation. All of the pins of the microcontroller are accessible by through-hole pads on the edge of the PCB allowing integration into your project. A prototyping area with 40 available through-hole pads on 0.1 inch centers and an array of 119 surface mount pads spaced for common device packages including access to VDD and GND is provided for your own circuit design additions. ENJOY!!
