Lab 6-2: factors affecting reaction rate
Names:
/ 36 Date:
Purpose:
Part 1: Effect of Temperature
Test the effect of three different temperatures of water (cold, warm and hot) on the rate at which an Alka Seltzer tablet dissolves.
Part 2: Effect of Concentration
Test the effect of three different concentrations of HCl (0.01, 0.1, and 1 M) on the rate at which a piece of zinc metal dissolves.
Part 3: Effect of Surface Area
Test the effect of three different surface areas of an Alka Seltzer Tablet (whole tablet, chunks, crushed) on the rate at which an Alka Seltzer tablet dissolves.
Part 4: Effect of the Presence of a Catalyst
Test the effect of a catalyst (nothing, CuCl2, NaCl, KI) on the rate at which hydrogen peroxide decomposes.
Procedure:
Part 1: Effect of Temperature
Chose three different temperatures of water (cold, warm and hot) and time how long it takes for one Alka-Seltzer tablet to dissolve.
Part 2: Effect of Concentration
Use three different concentrations of HCl given (0.01, 0.1, and 1 M) and time the rate that a small piece of metal zinc dissolves.
Part 3: Effect of Surface Area
Create three different surface areas of an Alka Seltzer Tablet (whole tablet, chunks, crushed). Dissolve the three tablets, in three separate beakers, and time how long it takes for each to dissolve.
Part 4: Effect of the Presence of a Catalyst
Using four separate beakers, pour equal amounts of hydrogen peroxide into each. Using three different catalysts (nothing, CuCl2, NaCl, KI) time the rate at which hydrogen peroxide decomposes.
