Requirements for Candidacy
· Cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher based on five core subjects (Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies) with no grade lower than a C-.
· No Citizenship, Achievement, or Effort grades of N or U on quarterly report card
· Enrolled at Diamond Canyon for at least one semester (90 days)
· Be an incoming Fifth or Sixth grader
· Qualified candidates will be invited to apply for membership once per year during the last quarter of the school year.
Requirements for Membership
· Cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher based on five core subjects (Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies) with no grade lower than a C-.
· No Citizenship, Achievement, or Effort grades of N or U on quarterly report card
· Must display evidence of Scholarship, Responsibility, Service, and Leadership
· Students transferring membership must provide proof of membership and will become automatic members
· Selection of members is made by a majority vote of the Faculty Council
· Candidates must complete inductions in order to attain membership status
Induction of New Members
· Induction ceremonies will be conducted once per year during the fourth quarter of the school year
· All sixth grade members will be recognized and honored
· The induction ceremony will be a formal occasion held in the evening
· Family members will be invited to attend
Student Requirements to Remain Active
· Maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.75 or higher based on five core subjects (Reading, Writing, Math, Science, and Social Studies).
· No Citizenship, Achievement, or Effort grades of N or U on quarterly report card
· Members are responsible for submitting a copy of their quarterly report card by the designated deadline.
· Members’ disciplinary records may be reviewed to ensure they meet membership standards.
· At least two community service credits per quarter
· Attend meetings regularly with the allowance of no more than two missed meetings during the school year. Members who arrive more than 10 minutes late will be considered absent. Because members are allowed to miss two meetings, no absences will be considered “excused.”
· Any member who voluntarily quits NEHS may not be eligible for reinstatement
Service Projects
· The chapter will offer service project opportunities each quarter. These opportunities will be assigned a credit value
· Members are required to earn two service credits per quarter
Grounds for Hearing with the Faculty Council to Determine Membership Status (potential Dismissal)
· Not fulfilling meeting attendance requirements
· Not fulfilling quarterly service project credits
· More than one probationary period earned within the school year
· One or more Citizenship, Achievement, or Effort grade of N or U on quarterly report card
· Behavioral “X” on quarterly report card
· Office Referral
· Poor classroom, special area, lunch, or recess behavior
Hearing Procedures
· Members have the right to a hearing with the Faculty Council.
· Based on the hearing, the Faculty Council shall review the member’s record and vote on his or her membership status.
· Following administrator approval, the member will be notified in writing of the Faculty Council’s decision
· Members who are dismissed may appeal the decision of the Faculty Council. The administration of Diamond Canyon will receive and handle all appeals
· Per the national NEHS Constitution Article 9 Section 7, the National Office shall not hear any appeals
· The decision of the administration is final
Grounds for Probation
· Cumulative GPA falling below a 3.75.
· Any individual grade below a C-.
Probationary Categories and Periods
· The length and category of a probationary period will depend upon the infraction
· During the probationary period, members shall remain fully active and are expected to continue to fulfill membership requirements
· Members will be notified in writing of their probationary status
Probationary Appeals
· Upon receipt of a Letter of Notification of Probation, a member may appeal
· The member must adhere to the following steps in order to appeal any probationary status
o Contact the Chapter Advisor to discuss questions and concerns
o If after speaking with the advisor the member still wishes to appeal the probation, they may then contact Diamond Canyon administration
o The decision of the Diamond Canyon administration shall be final
o Per the national NEHS Constitution Article 9 Section 7, the National Office shall not hear any appeals
Faculty Council
· The Faculty Council shall consist of the Advisor and at least two voting faculty members
· The Faculty Council serves for one year, beginning in April
· Faculty Council members may serve consecutive terms
Officers
· Officers will be determined by the Faculty Council at the beginning of the school year.
· Each candidate will give a speech to the Faculty Council during an after school session.
· Following speeches, the Faculty Council will select the NEHS officers.
· The Faculty Council will select the following office positions:
o President
o Vice President
o Secretary
o Historian
· The Faculty Council may also appoint Lieutenants of Community Service
· The President, Vice-President, and Secretary will be known as the Executive Council
· The Executive Council will be held to higher standards than the general membership. Any action resulting in probation or a hearing may also result in removal from office and Executive Council membership
· In the event of an officer being removed, the Faculty Council will appoint a replacement
