DFST Internship Orientation Meeting
Agenda
- Pre-requisites for Internship
a. Completion of ASL 4, ASL 5 preferred
b. Completion of DFST 345 (Deaf Culture)
c. Completion of DFST 210 (Career Exploration) except students in the
DFST/ELED and DFST/SPPA combined majors
d. Criminal Background Check if required by placement (required by all schools)
e. Consent of Department
- Defining an Internship
a. How much time? How many credits?
3 credits = 90 hours = approximately 6 hours per week
b. Students also attend one 2-hour class session every OTHER week
c. The internship must last for at least 10 weeks, although most last for the full
15-week semester
d. Should meet your personal scheduling needs
e. Should support your long-term career goal
f. Must offer supervision, exposure to Deaf people, opportunities to use and improve ASL
- What to Register for?
a. DFST 410.101 3 credits, not a MD Public School
b.DFST 410.102 3 credits, only in a MD Public School
- How to Select an Internship
- Consider your career goals upon graduation and the experiences you want to get now as your begin your career
- Review the chart listing previous DFST Internship placements. You are welcome to identify additional sites to add to this list
c. Complete the REQUEST FOR DFST INTERNSHIP PLACEMENT form
Note deadlines:May 1 for Fall or Summer, December 1 for Spring
- For MD Public School placements, complete the TIMS application on-line through PeopleSoft. For questions, contact Mr. Gary Caldwell, 410-704-2567,
e. For any other placement, meet with Dr. Cooper to discuss best choices. Call or email the contact person on-site to let them know of your interest and ask if they are interested in an intern for the particular semester. Schedule an interview with the on-site contact person. Bring a resume to the interview. It is a two0way interview to see if you’re a match- you can decide if you want them, and they will be deciding if they want you. Feel free to call, email, or meet with Dr. Cooper as needed for support and ideas throughout this process. More communication is better!
f. When you and the contact person agree that there is a match, contact Dr. Cooper to provide details
g. Work out days and hours with the supervisor. Obtain a contract from Dr. Cooper for supervisor to complete. Provide supervisor with a DFST Internship Manual that includes all forms and deadlines
- It is the Intern’s Responsibility to:
a. Arrange time in your class/work schedule to be able to do your internship.
b. Identify a few potential internship sites that look interesting and relevant by:
Summer: May 1
Fall: May 30
Spring: November 30
c. Contact the potential sites to obtain information about the location, duties, and scheduling of the internship by:
Summer: May 10
Fall: June 15
Spring: December 15
d. Schedule 2-3 interviews with possible sites to determine which site best matches the interests, skills, and schedule of the intern by:
Summer: May 12
Fall: August 1
Spring: January 10
e. Seek input from Dr. Cooper as needed with questions and suggestions about placements, and keep Dr. Cooper informed regarding progress toward obtaining and internship.
f. Make the final decision selecting an internship site, confirm this site with the supervisor and with Dr. Cooper, and thank all supervisors from sites that were not selected (no later than 10 days before the semester beings).
g. Ask the on-site supervisor what- if any- type of background check may be required, and complete that process in a timely manner.
- Registering for Internship
Once you have met all of the requirements for the internship, Dr. Cooper will give your name and ID number to Kay Glorioso in the department office and Kay will give you internal permission to register for the internship.
