Who will be my first point of contact?

- Working hours and conditions
Will I be a City College Norwich member of staff?
Yes, when you become a member of Devour Student Crew you are a City College Norwich member of staff so all contractual, policies and procedures for staffing will apply to you.
Will there be any documentation to complete prior to working?
As well as applying via the website you will be required to complete pre-employment checks before you work. Please see the briefing sheet explaining these.
It is important that you have the right to work in the UK. You will need to produce the original documents for this which will be your passport or birth certificate. This will be asked of you when you complete your pre-employment checks.
What if I do not complete the documentation and checks?
You will not be able to work and be paid without these being completed. If you need help with completion or you cannot produce all the documentation please contact HR Services for advice on 01603 773102
What hours will I be expected to work?
The hours are variable so you can be called upon as and when to work this will include evenings and weekends. These hours will be confirmed with the Devour Co-ordinator.
You cannot work no more than 8 hours per day or 40 hours per week if you are under 18.
Will I receive a break when I work?
Yes, you cannot work no more than 6 hours before having at least a 20 minute break.
What uniform do I wear?
Yes, you will be expected to wear the uniform you purchased for the course that you are undertaking.
- Pension
What is a pension?
A pension is a way of saving for your retirement. You put money into your pension each month, and in return, you get an income once you've retired. You don't have to pay tax on pension contributions. The pension you will be paying into is one of the main public sector pension schemes.
Why am I paying into a pension? Does City College contribute to my pension pot?
Every member of staff is automatically enrolled into the pension scheme. City College also contributes to your pension pot. The percentage contributed by City College is dependent on your earnings.
What Pension Am I Contributing To?
The Local Government Pension Scheme which is run by the Norfolk Pension Fund.

- Tax
What tax am I paying?
You may pay tax on a certain percentage of your income, the amount you pay is dependent on your individual tax code. Tax codes are issued by HMRC and the payroll team legally has to use the codes issued to them. The payroll team cannot decide your tax code or change it on your request. We can only change a tax code once we have received notification from HMRC to do so.
I am a student and shouldn’t be paying tax?
All staff are eligible to pay tax, dependent on their earnings. Students are not exempt from paying tax.
Who do I need to talk to rectify problems with my tax?
You will need to contact the tax office on 0300 200 3300. You will need your national insurance number with you when you call.
What is basic rate tax?
If you have a basic rate tax code you will pay 20% tax on all of your earnings up to £32,000. You will have no tax free earnings.
- National Insurance Certificate
What is a National Insurance Certificate?
A National Insurance Certificate will have been posted to you by HMRC informing you of your national insurance number. The HR and payroll team will need to see your National Insurance Certificate in order to ensure your tax and national insurance payments are recorded against your name only.
I have misplaced it, where can I get a new certificate from?
You will need to call the national insurance helpline on 0300 200 3519, who will be able to arrange issuing you a new certificate.
As I am a student do I have to pay a contribution towards National Insurance?
All staff are eligible to pay National Insurance, dependent on their earnings. Students are not exempt from paying National Insurance.
- Timesheets – Claiming your hours worked
Where do I find blank timesheets and what do they look like?
Timesheets are located outside the payroll office in F209, on the top floor of the Wroxham Building. Payroll are located on the floor above the canteen near the HR offices. There are a few different forms outside the office - You will need to complete a variable hours timesheet which will be the form printed on blue paper.
If I am struggling to fill in a timesheet where can I go for help?
The Devour Co-ordinator will be able to help you complete your timesheet.
Who do I give my timesheet to once it is complete?
Once your timesheet is completed it will need to be authorised and signed by the Devour Co-ordinator and Head of School Payroll cannot accept any timesheets which have not been authorised.
The Devour Co-ordinator or Head of School will deliver your timesheet to payroll for you.
The payroll team need to receive authorised timesheets by the 8th of each month. If we do not receive your authorized timesheet by this date you will not be paid until the following month.
What time of the month do we get paid?
You will be paid on the 25th of each month. If the 25th falls on a weekend or bank holiday you will be paid on the Friday before.
If I forget to fill in a timesheet, will I still get paid?
No, you will not be paid if the payroll team have not received an authorized timesheet.
