Agenda

•The Digital Production Center (DPC) and Digitization Activities

• Progress on the CMDL project

• Application of the Tianyuan Math Fund of NSFC

• About the Chinese Journal Network

1.The Digital Production Center (DPC) and Digitization Activities

The DPC of TH Library founded in March 2003

Equipments include:

five scanners :one Minolta PS-7000; three flat scanners; one high speed scanner

ten personal computers(Pentium III), four computer servers (Legend & HP )

Staff includes:

nine temporary workers, one flow-manager, one technical-supervisor

Digital workflow:

Workflow 1 -- One Million book Project

Workflow 2 -- CALIS Reserve Book Project

Workflow 3 -- Tsinghua Reserve Book Project

Workflow 4 -- CMDL project

Digitization Works: (from April, 2003 to March, 2004, about one year)

700 thousand pages of ancient books

50 thousand pages of reserve books

2. Progress on the CMDL project

CMDL project is a two-year (2002.11-2004.10) project funded by the Tsinghua University’s Basic Research Foundation and collaborated with the Math Dept. , the Computer Science and Technology Dept. and the Electronic Engineering Dept. .

CMDL is a multimedia resource for exhibiting the math ancient books, Chinese mathematician’s monographs, the modern math journals and some Cartoons about principles of ancient arithmetic, etc.

The CMDL’s new progress includes:

• drafting a set of metadata standards for math ancient books

description of metadata;

administrative metadata:techMD, rightMD, digiprovMD, sourceMD

• selecting METS as encoding and transmission standard

• developing the software of MathCat

gathering the metadata and generate METS objects

•Digitization works

70 thousand pages (about 100 title) of ancient math books

some cartoons about principles of ancient arithmetic

•Designing and developing the CMDL system Architecture

The CMDL system base on the Fedora system

Fedora has developed an open-source digital repository management system by Cornell University and University of Virginia.

Computer Dept. has developed a prototype system with extended Fedora functions.

The CMDL’s architecture has three layers: user interface; internal service; data storage

The CMDL in-progress prototype site:

The CMDL team will complete its work in October this year. Sowe applied for the Tianyuan Mathematics Fund of NSFC last month.

3. Application of the Tianyuan Maths Fund of NSFC

The Tianyuan Maths Fund is a special fund of the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC)

Tianyuan supports aspects :

• discovering and helping persons with ability of mathematics

• Mathematic subject development and exchange

• Build mathematic research environment

• Mathematic education and dissemination

The CMDL accords with last two terms.

TH Library associates with four units (the Math Dept. , the Computer Science and Technology Dept. and the Electronic Engineering Dept. ) and applied for the Tianyuan Mathematics Fund.

We hope the Tianyuan can support 300 thousand RMB every year, A four-year (2005-2008) project.

4. About the Chinese Journal Network

•the Chinese Journal Network has published about 6000 fulltext e-journals by Web

Including 53 math journals that are linked to EMANI

• distribution of the CJN institution users

China Mainland: over 2,100 institutions

Hong Kong, Taiwan, Macao: over 100 institutions

USA, Canada, Australia, Japan, Germany: over 50 institutions

• the CJN is developed by the Tongfang Company that is a Tsinghua University’s holding company

•most of backfile journals (before 1997) have been retrodigitized

the CJN has 6 Digital Production Centers

located in Beijing, (The Beijing Digital Production Center has over 400 staff )

Jiujiang of Jiangxi Province,

Changzhou of Jiangsu Province,

Chengdu of Sichun Province,

Zhuozhou of Heibei Province,

Xinzhou of Shanxi Province

•among 53 math journals, there are about 10 Journals published by English.
