Objective:
1. The students willcreatea spreadsheet showing the number of candy wrappers the class brought in after Halloween.

  1. The students will use the spreadsheet information to create a chart using the Chart Wizard.

Procedures:

Before Coming to the Computer Lab

  1. Download and make student copies of the Candy Wrapper count sheet.
  2. Have students record the data.

In the Computer Lab

Get Started

1.Open Microsoft Excel.

2.Close the Task Pane on the right side of the window if it is open.

3.Click in Cell A1 and type: Candy Wrappers.

4.Press Enter.

5.Go to File > Save as.

6.Save to the student’s folder on the school server.

7.Find and double click the teacher's folder.

8.Find and double click the student's folder.

9.In the Filename box, highlight Book1 and type CandyWrapperStudentName.

10.Click Save.

Format and Enter Data

1.Click in Cell A1and drag to Cell B1 to highlight the two cells.

2.Select Format > Cells.

3.Click the Alignment tab and choose Center for the Horizontal alignment.

4.In the Textcontrol section, check the Merge Cells box.

5.Click OK.

6.In Cell A3 type: Chocolate.

7.Press Enter.

8.In Cell A4, type: Hard.

9.Press Enter.

10.In Cell A5, type: Chewy.

11.Press Enter.

12.In Cell A6, type: Suckers.

13.Press Enter 2 times.

14.In Cell A8, type: Total Wrappers.

15.Press Enter.

16.Go to FileSave.

Format Borders and Shading

1.Click in Cell A1 and Drag to Cell B8 to highlight all those cells.

2.Click Format > Cells in the top menu.

3.Click the Alignment tab and choose Center for the Horizontal alignment.

4.In the Textcontrol section, check the Wrap text box.

5.Click the Font tab and make the following changes:
a.Font–student’s choice
b.Size -- 12
c.Color -- a DARK color.

6.Click the Border tab and select the Inside and Outline buttons.

7.Click the Patterns tab and choose a LIGHT color.

8.Click OK.

9.Go to FileSave.

Change Column Width and Enter Formulas

1.Move the cursor over the gray bar above the columns until it is between column A and column B. It changes into a vertical line with horizontal arrows. Click and drag to widen column A so the word Chocolate will fit.

2.Click in Cell B3 and type how many Chocolate wrappers were brought.

3.Press Enter.

4.In Cell B4, type how many Hard candy wrappers were brought.

5.Press Enter.

6.In Cell B5, type how many Chewy candy wrappers were brought.

7.Press Enter.

8.In Cell B6, type how many Sucker wrappers were brought.

9.Click in Cell B8.

10.Click the Auto Sum button in the top toolbar.(Cells B3 through B7 will be highlighted with the “marching ants”).

11.Press Enter. The sum of all the candy wrappers will be in cell B8.

12.Go to FileSave.

Create a Chart

1.Click in Cell A3 and drag to Cell B6 to highlight the types of candy and the number of wrappers for each type.

2.Click the Chart Wizard button in the top toolbar.

3.On Step 1 of the Chart Wizard, select Column.

4.Click Next.

5.On Step 2 of the Chart Wizard, select Next.

6.On Step 3 of the Chart Wizard, type Candy Wrappers in the Chart title box.

7.In the Category (X) axis box, type: Types of Candy.

8.In the Value (Y) axis box, type: Number of Wrappers.

9.Click the Legend tab.

10.Uncheck the Show Legend box. (This will remove the Legend from the chart.)

11.Clickthe Data Labels tab.

12.Click the Value box to show the data value on each column of the chart.

13.Click Next.

14.On Step 4 of the Chart Wizard, make sure As object in is selected and click Finish.

15.Go to FileSave.

Move and Formatthe Chart

1.Move the cursor over a white section of the chart until it becomes a white arrow.

2.Click, hold, and drag the chart to Column A Row 9. Release.

3.Click the bottom right corner of the chart and drag it to down to Row 39 and over to the middle of Column H.

4.Right-click on a white section of the chart background and select Format Chart Area.

5.On the Patterns tab, select a light color from the right side of the screen for a background color.

6.Select the Font tab and choose the following:
a.Font–student’s choice
b.Size -- 12
c.Color -- a DARK color.

7.Click OK.

8.Move the cursor over the gray plot area and right- click.

9.Select Format Plot Area.

10.Select a Lightcolor for the plot area background.

11.Click OK.

12.Go to FileSave.

Change the Color of a Series (Column)

1.Click the Chocolate column. A dot appears in all the columns.

2.Click the Chocolate column again. Handles appear around just the chocolate column.

3.Click the down arrow of the FillColor button on the top toolbar and select Brown for chocolate.

4.Select the Hard column.

5.Click the down arrow of the FillColor button and select Yellow.

6.Select the Chewy column.

7.Click the down arrow of the FillColor button and select Green.

8.Select the Suckers column.

9.Click the down arrow of the FillColor button and select Red.

10.Go to FileSave.

11.Click on Cell B3 and press the Delete key to delete the number in the spreadsheet.

12.Type a different number in Cell B3 and notice how the total changes in Cell B8 and how the chart changes as soon as the information is entered.

13.Click the Undo button on the top toolbar two times to return the chart to normal.

14.Go to FileSave.

Create Formulas

1.Highlight cells C1 - E3.

2.Click the Merge and Center button on the top toolbar.

3.Type: How many more Chocolate wrappers are there than Hard wrappers?

4.Press Enter.

5.Click back on the cell with the question.

6.Go to FormatCellsAlignment tab.

7.In the Textcontrol section, check the Wraptext box.

8.Click OK.

9.Go to FileSave.

10.Click into cell C5.

11.Discuss with students what type of mathematical expression is needed to answer the question (Subtraction).

12.Explain to students that they will type in a formula that will subtract the number of Hard wrappers from the number of Chocolate wrappers.

13.In cell C5, type Choc. and press Enter.

14.In cell C6, type Hard and press Enter.

15.In cell C7, type Difference and press Enter.

16.Click in cell D5, type the number of Chocolate wrappers and press Enter.

17.In cell D6, type the number of Hard wrappers and press Enter.

18.In cell D7, type the subtraction formula =d5-d6 and press Enter.

19.Go to FileSave.

Add a Header and Format Font

1.Go to File > Page Setup.

2.Select the Header/Footer tab.

3.Click the Custom Header button.

4.Click the Font button and choose the following:
a.Font–student’s choice
b.Size - 12.

5.Click OK.

6.Have students type their name in the Left section.

7.Press the Tab key to move to the Center section.

8.Click the Font button and choose the following:
a.Font–student’s choice
b.Size - 12.

9.Click OK.

10.Type: Candy Wrappers

11.Press the Tab key to move to the Rightsection.

12.Click the Font button and select student’s choice - Size 12.

13.Click OK.

14.Type the date.

15.Click OK in the top right corner.

16.Click the Sheet tab.

17.In the Print section, check the Gridlines box.

18.Click OK.

19.Go to FileSave.

Set Print Area and Print

1.Highlight cells A1 – H40 (all of the information and then some).

2.Go to FilePrintAreaSet Print Area.

3.Go to FilePrint.

4.Choose the correct printer and click OK.

Modifications:Allowmore time; Provide a partially completed template; Work in pairs
Extensions:Have students create a pie chart using the spreadsheet
Have students take a different poll (favorite fast food, color, etc) and create a spreadsheet and chart
Develop questions related to the chart and have students analyze the chart for the answers
